PILGRIM WINS THE REMSEN HANDICAP Withdrawal of Hobey Baker Brings Disappointment to Patrons of Jamaica Racing. NEW YORK, N. Y., October 9. Despite threatening weather :i good crowd was in attendance at the course of the Metropolitan Jockey Club today to witness the running of the Remsen Handicap, ,000 added, for two-year-olds, nt three-quarters of a mile, which was the feature of an excellent program. Keen disappointment was expressed at l he withdrawal of Holey Baker, from which much was expected, W. J. Salmon relying on My Laddie to carry his colors to victory. Simpleton also was withdrawn, leaving a field of five, with Pilgrim ruling the favorite at post time. Head Over Heels, with her usual speed, went to the front, followed by St. Allan, with the favorite within striking distance. This order was continued until on the stretch turn, when Head Over Heels dropped back beaten, St. Allan taking the lead, which lie maintained until Pilgrim, with a well-timed rush, overhauled him, drawing clear in the final fifty yards. St. Allan was easily next best, the May filly just lasting to save the small end of the purse. Favorite backers received a jolt in the first race when the oddly named Mumbo Jumbo jumped into r.n early lead and held sway throughout. Sycamoor, 1 he favorite, pressed the leader all the way. but Iteked the necessary speed to reduce the gap between them. Ninety Simplex was best of the others, coining from the rear in resolute fashion. Albert A. took the secondary feature at one and one-quarter miles from Woodtrap and Snapdragon II. This consistent and underrated horse took the lead "on the backstretch and was never seriously menaced afterward. Jockey Troxler incurred the displeasure of starter Cassidy in the fourth race and was suspended for tiie remainder of the meeting for disobedience at the barrier.
