Chasseur Best Balanced Colt That Will Start in Latonia9 s Big Race--Good Staging Blood in His Pedigree By EXILE Still they come. The announcement has gone forth that Chasseur is Championship hound. Always a favorite of mine, I have known the colt ever since his yearling days. The best balanced colt that will start for the big race, 15.3 hands, plenty of length, a true made one in every particular, though I fancy he has never yet in public shown the form of which he is capable. Last year at Saratoga I saw him hold the redoubtable Billy Kelly for the best part of the Albany Handicap journey, and Star Hampton beat the pair of them at the wind-up. The son of Light Brigade, however, lost form for some reason after this, and apparently has never fully regained it, and his racing efforts have this season been more or less disappointing. Athlone beat him for lack of condition, I think, at Saratoga; old Whimsy was too much for him at Aqueduct, and over the same course, though most leniently treated in the matter- of weight, he failed at the end of a mile to make any sort of impression on Herodias and Thunderclap. The latter was of course well behind Sir Barton and Mad Hatter in the Maryland Handicap, so Chasseur will be compelled to improve on this to hold a winning chance in the Championship. Chasseur, however, has now been a resident in this country long enough to have become thoroughly acclimatized, and any day now may be found capable of maintaining his speed over a long distance of ground. Chasseur, moreover, is bred to stay. His sire, Light Brigade, beat Tracerys conqueror, Cantilever, in the Jockey Club Stakes when in competition for the Durham County Produce Stakes at Stockton. Panne, dam of Chasseur, is a daughter of the three times leading English sire Polymelus, which in his racing days ran second to Ohallacombe for the St. Leger, won the Cambridgeshire, Chum pi-.n Stakes and Duke of York Stakes, Chiffon, Chasseurs granddam, is by the Derby, St. Leger and Ascot Gold Cup winner Persimmon, :ind Is the dam of the two miles Sydney Cup winusr Lilyvah. Camballo, sire of Cassimere. was good enough to win the Two Thousand, and T1iomuiiI,y won the Derby and Ascot Gold Cup. All good staying blood this. It is therefore hard to account for Chasseurs past failures to see things to a CinWi. Chasseur is a member of the Bruce Lowe outride family No. 25, from which no really good horse iias come, so far as I know, since the days of Comus and Slane. Sefton, of course, won the Derby, but was iiilv of poor class. Racing, however, over a long distance seems to have no terrors for Lilyvnle. Mnvbo the inbreeding of Chasseur to Bend Or on both top lines of his pedigree is the cause of his inability to maintain his speed far. Anyway, I expect to see him run an improved horse." and now that h.j iias become acclimatized his fine speed shouil enable him to make it at least interesting for tho winner of the Latonia Championship.
