MILE HANDICAP AT LAUREL i ; Furnishes Only Interesting Race of Card Riddled by Scratches. Bridesman Is the Winner, Defeating the Favorite, Slippery-Elm, in Great Finish. ; LAUREL. 311., October 27. A chance In track conditions wart responsible for numerous with-drawnls at Laurel this afternoon, and as a result the fields in a majority of the races were materially reduced. The feature race, a handicap at one mile, furnished an interesting contest, Bridesman coming from behind and boating out the favorite, Slippery Kim. three parts of a length. Slippery Elm set a fast pace and racol into a commanding lead in the early part of the- race, but in the stretch drive tired. Midnight Sun and Royce Rools, the two other starters in this race, were over twenty lengths in the rear at the finish. In the opening dash Goldine, second choice in the speculation, easily defeated the favorite. Who Carps, -while American Boy just got up in time to get the short end of the purse. The public made no mistake in selecting George Clark to win the second race, the Talbott racer coming home four lengths in advance of General, which, beat St. Quentin a length for second place. The unconsidered Ardito, paying 5.60 for in the mutuels, accounted for the fourth race, but the result might have been different had C. S. tjranon a stronger rider up. .T. Nuccio was of little help to the Murray horse, which came from behind and finished with a rush on his own courage. The Decision, showing sudden improvement, won the sixth race, defeating the favorite, Search Light 711., the latter racingingame biiruuamiling pursuit throughout. It was Poachers race from start to finish in the mile nnd a sixteenth dash that concluded the days sport, the former Hildreth racer outclassing his opponents and winning without ever being extended. James Boden reached Laurel with the fast three-venr-old fillv. Ten Rose, and the Uncle colt. Senator Crow. In the same car J. I. Mayberry brought down U division of James Arthurs stable, including Lord Herbert, Kingling II., and Little Maudie. Jockeys Ensor and Kummer readied the course front New York. The former led the list of winning riders at the Empire City meeting, and thereby won a gold split second watch. The surplus from the selling and claiming races ou Saturday amounted to ,010, which will make an apportionment of .66 among the winners of six flat races on Tuesday, or a purse of ,101.06 each. The thoroughbreds of S. C. Hildreth. W. S. Kilmer and a division of Captain Parrs stable will leave Laurel for Pimlico Tuesday morning. Captain Parr is leaving several of Lis horses to race during the remainder of the Laurel meeting. Blazes, the crack two-year-old. was shipped to Pimlico to be prepared for the Walden Stakes. Kimball Patter-bons extensive stable also was sent to Pimlico. The agricultural fair, which opened today, attracted a big crowd of people from the surrounding country districts. There were all sorts of amusements on the Midway, provided by general manager Luke Cassidy. The horses trained by G. R. Tompkins will be shipped to Pimlico on Wednesday. Weldship may be ii starter in the Manly Memorial if lie trains satisfactorily, and just now the old fellow looks good. Jockey Andy Schuttinger, who was injured at Havre de Grace while riding in the race in which jockey Phil- Musgrave was killed, is well on his way to recovery. Schuttinger had to submit to an operation to remove a blood clot on the brain and is now doing finely. . Dr. Ashe and judge W. W. Lyles arc looking after the closing of the stakes to be run at Oriental Park meeting in Cuba, and horsemen wishing blanks for same can obtain them from either of these gentlemen. The first shipment for Cuba will leave Laurel shortly after the close of the present meeting.
