LOUISVILLE, Ky., October 27. Jack Hare Jr. furnished an outstanding upset in todays racing when he suffered defeat by Merry Princess in the sprint race, contested by some good ones. On the strength of his good recent performances lie was regarded as almost a certainty, and the confident support he had caused him to. rule the shortest priced favorite in some time. His failure was held to be primarily due to the ride that Murray gave him. That rider lias declined in his work since the spring meetings. He restrained the colt unduly for the first three-eighths and threw him off his stride, in addition to causing interference with hirii. On the stretch turn he found a clear course and rode Jack Hare Jr. hard, but Mery Princess, which Boyle hail rushed into a long lead at the half mile ground, had speed, in reserve, and outstayed the favorite with ease through the last sixteenth. The winner showed suddenly improved form and it was her best performance in these parts.-. American Ace had to be driven to the limit to, outstay George Starr for third place. The race also reintroduced Colonel Livingston, which has been in retirement since the early spring, but that colt clearly indicated, that he was short, for":he retired from contention after showing a dazzling blfof speed for the first three-eighths.. The intermittent hard rains since .Saturday night again", caused the- tracteto-JjeComo "isoggyT tiut--.it -was. improving steadily under the constant attention it received from a large force of track workers and implements. Cloudy weather was again present, but It seemingly did not figure in reducing the attendance, for a goodly Monday crowd was in attendance. The different evenly matched fields served as splendid betting mediums and good prices were had about all the winners. The backers of favorites were again in clover, for four choices scored. The only real offenders in this respect being Jack Hare Jr. and Tanlac. John O. again showed n sparkling performance by accounting for the mile and an eighth dash after-" a hard drive to outstay Madge F. and Sans Peur II. Blackie Day; upset calculations when he dc- fcated War God, arid winning easily at that. Green Gold and Subahdar engaged in a rattling duel in the initial: race, with the former winning by a neck. r .- - - George M. Hendrie uncovered his Destroyer in the second race and it was only a stiff gallop for him to win. El Key was overlooked in the sixth race nnd had no difficulty in leading home the band that opposed liim. Joe Stahr gave his backers some anxious moments in the stretch, where he began sulking; but Boyle got him to going again near the end and he outstayed Bourbon Green, an outsider, to land the purse. UNDECIDED AS TO MISS JEMIMA. C. E. Rpwe is undecided with reference to Miss Jemima, which has not been raced since her start in the Futurit" at Belmont iPark. Shei will not be raced next Winter, biit he-has riot made -up his mind whether to take her along to New Orleans with his other horses or turn her out at one of the farms in these parts to roam until spring. Gallaher Bros, have arranged to ship all their horses into winter quarters; near Lexington, immediately after the close of racing here. They have seven yearlings, sired by Bock View, Dick Fin-nell and Jack Atkin, in addition to eight older horses. Charles La nsdale, who will officiate; as one, of the stewards at Havana next winter and Is also extensively financially interested in the track there, is busy here issuing passports to numerous owners and tljeir employees who will take part in - the Cuban racing next winter; Captain J. T. Jacobs, who for years had chargw of the police arrangements on Kentucky tracks, also at Juarez, died this morning after a long illness. Jockey Pool will be absent from . the saddle for three days, having been suspended for that term by the starter in. Saturdays, first race. B. J. Brannon has added the yearling filly by Dick Finnell Moonet to his establishment paying the reported price of ,500 for her. She is a sister to Jack Hare Jr.. and at the August Saratoga sales was bought in for ,000. Acting for K. D. Alexander, Jr., trainer W. J. Young today disposed of the colts Airdrie to G. L. Baker and Anticipate to Masterson and Rogers. He also sold for his own account the colt Black Prince to F. M. Rector. Jack Hare Jr will in all probability continue racing next winter, and his owner, AV. E. Apple-. gate, has in contemplation sending him to New Orlearis in charge of John C. FerrLss. With good weather tomorrow it is expected that the largest attendance of the Churchill Downs autumn meeting will be on hand to greet the .5,000 members of the "Fighting First" Division and their officers, who will be guests of the Kentucky Jock.ey Club. As many soldiers now in Camp Taylor as can be spared from duty will also be privileged to wit- ness the sport. : n
