j 1 ; I j ; j , , REVIEW OF NEW YORK RACING MONEY REAPED BY COMPETING OWNERS IN THE NEW YORK RACING FIELD IN 1919 SHOWS A GENEROUS INCREASE OVER THE CORRESPONDING STATISTICS OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR The year 1919 was one of general prosperity in the New York racing field. Relieved from the cares and anxieties of the Great War, the people to whose entertainment the various racing organizations catered gave the tracks a measure of patronage vastly increased over that awarded in 1918. A reflex of this agreeable feature was that, without exception, the racing bodies increased their offerings of money to be competed for by owners, the gross gain over 191S being 61, 0S3, in which the Westchester Itacing Association was the leader with 1,087 more than in 1918, followed by the Metropolitan Jockey Club with 0,643, the Empire City Jockey Club witli 2,737 and the Queens County Jockey Club with 0,820 The increase at Saratoga was only 1919.sh,315. It is probable a greater increase there will follow its meeting in 1920, it being understood its meeting of this year was sufficiently profitable to warrant it. Being in the main dependent upon gate receipts for their revenue, the New York racing organizations i are at a disanvantage compared with the Maryland and Kentucky tracks, with their opulent receipts from mutuel percentages, in addition to generous returns from admission charges. It follows that in- i creases in money offered to be raced for are not so easily to be brought about there as in the rival south- 1 ern and western fields. Under all the circumstances the New York tracks treated owners generously in ; 1919. The three tabulations following give a comprehensive statistical history of the campaign of 1919 over the New York tracks: v. v. v. v. n si a ? e - o H2 icS 0 s o 2, mq , , , i, ... . ... .. ?2 oo r .,2 a n s - q ando 2" Track and Meeting. n " osj JfiSi : on cn s,n anda.Ssj -. - " h-o s c .. 2. 2 ? f 2 . Hildreth fared besL M had gradually gathered a. powerful stable, Si ranging from such stars of the year as Purchase H and Lucullite, down to extremely serviceable sell- M ing platers, and with them achieved many notable L triumphs with enviable resultant returns in money. G Next to hiin and not far behind him came the Glen M Riddle Farm, owing its 4,501 almost exclusively O the champion two-year-old of the year. H. P. M Whitney always figures conspicuously in New York Si racing and this year takes third place. He was the F beneficiary of a piece of good luclr when his fine filly H Vexatious was awarded the rich Lawrence Realiza- N tion Stakes on a foul that took the" big race away L from W. R. Coes Over There. His two-year- R old division was excellent and seems to insure him it strong hand in the three-year-old racing of 1920. R The great stable of Commander J. K. L. Ross won J its greatest successes elsewhere, but did well T enough oh the New York tracks to bring up in L fourth place. Mr. J. E. Widener had his best j year since returning to American racing and fin- r islied fifth, just ahead of W. R. Coe and It. In Sir Barton they saw probably the best three-year-old out since the matchless Colin was in ,racing and, .certainly, tlie best race, horse Star Shoot ever sent to the races. In Pur- chase they saw his greatest rival and one not far inferior to him in the highest qualites of the race horse. In Man o War they viewed a wonderful. two-year-old, only once beaten, and that by a fluke,: as well as being far and away the greatest money winner in New York racing. Of the older division tiey witnessed grand displays of speed and stamina from Lucullite, Naturalist, Exterminator, Fairy Wand, Star Master, Royce Rools, Pickwick, War Cloud, Valor, Old Rosebud, Cudgel, Hollister and others of deservedly high repute. Hannibal; Aexa-l tious, Tljunderelap, Audacious, Milkmaid, . Eterija,!,.. t Over There, Mad Hatter, Ormonda and Lord Brighton were other liigh-class three-year-olds which .contributed to their- enjoyment and of two-1 year-olds other .than Man o "War, Bonnie Mary, Golden Broom, Cleopatra, Panoply, Upset, Constancy, Miss Jemima, Cannandale, Neddam, Dominique, Blazes, Grayssian, Homely, John P. Grier, Kinnoul, Wihlair and Eddie Rickenbaclier raced brilliantly. In fact more horses of really high class and of all ages clashed in New York racing of 1919 than in many years past.
