AN IRISH CESAREW1TCH COUP Picture Saint, an Elderly Jumper, Wins Well Backed at 100 to 1. The Irish Cesarewitch, run last month at the Curragh of Kildare, was easily won by Picture Saint, a six-year-old gelding, which, as is common iii Ireland, runs equally well in steeplechase, hurdle and flat races. Picture Saiuts odds were 100 to 1 and a big betting coup of some 0,000 was made over the geldings win by the stable. He is by Picton Wise Saint, by St. Maclou, and had run forteen Irish races. Won five times before the race. Four of his five victories were in steeplechases, but at Limerick in July, as a 3 to 1 favorite, Picture Saint, won a liigliwcight handicap at two miles from a fair band by ten lengths, carrying 171 pounds. He is owned and trained by J. Ussher, a keen figure in Irish racing. . Tiit. Irish correspondent of the London Sportsman in writing of Picture Saint and the profit over his victory says: "As Picture Saint could always be backed at a long price indeed, most of the stable money for him was laid out at 100 to 1 it was easy to back him to win a good stake at little risk. I am told the stable won 0,000 or thereabouts over his success, but to do so involved the Investment of only 00. The stable winnings I have mentioned are, I hasten to say, so far as I know, no more than an "ou dit," but whatever the stake that was landed my have amounted to a usually wcll-plaeed informant confided to me before the race that the stable commission was 5,000 to 30, and from other sources some gossip reached me that there were additional transactions of ,000 to 0, 5,000 to 50, and minor wagers at the same rate of 100 to 1."
