G. M. VAN G0RDEN TO RACE AT ASCOT Veteran California Turfman Has a Number of Promising Youngsters of His Own Breeding. BY F. L. McKENXEY. SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., December 11. George Van Gorden, the veteran thoroughbred breeder, owner and trainer, shipped five yearlings of his own breeding Tuesday from his-E! Ripojo Ranch, Contra Costu County, to Ascot Park, los Angeles, for the racing to begin in the southern California city the first part of January. Mr. Van Gorden has raced horses for more than forty years and is still able to hold his own with the smartest trainers in the country. He has been engaged in breaking his yearlings the last few days and will school them to t lie barrier just as soon ns he arrives at Ascot. lie will do all the training of the string. He says he will have them ready to race in the first "baby" scrajnbles in the south. He is confident he will develop at least one horse in the band of the ealilier of Sir Edward, Rose Marian and Silvery Light, high-class performers that were bred at El Riposo. The coming two-year-olds are: Bay gelding, by Reformation Barbara Lane, by General Roberts. Bay filly, by Reformation Miss Roberts, by General Roberts. S Chestnut filly, by General Roberts Rose Cherry, by Rubicon. Chestnut gelding, by General Roberts: Frill, by Burgomaster. Chestnut filly, by General Roberts Eye Full, by Harrigau. The two geldings and three fillies appear to bo of the kind that will come to hand early. The Rose Cherry filly especially is a nicy looker. Rose Cherry is one of the most consistent brood mares hereabouts, among her progeny being Rose Marian, a fine race mare and now In the stud establishment of Charles W. Clark, El Puloniar, San Mateo County; Bing, a good winner and brood mare, and Silvery Light, a good inud runner. Mr. Van Gorden is also taking a" .three-year-old bay gelding, by Reformation Janice Marian, and a two-year-old chestnut gelding, by General Roberts Janice Marian. Neither has ever faced the barrier. General Roberts lias btftn a consistent sire of .wiiiners.-wfor many f.easons and it looks as though, his latest- crop" will lie -uii to the standardof-other years. The old fellow is nineteen years old. He is a chestnut of good conformation, and is by Brutus Golden Locks, by Ormonde. Reformation has not had as many opportunities as Geaeral Roberts, only being about half the Generals age, but is getting every chance now to show what lie can do. He is a bav, by Ossary Future Bright, by Ben Brush. The weanlings at El Riposo this year arc a hardy looking band. Their breeding follows: Chestnut colt, by General Roberts Riviera.
