BREEDING FLOURISHES IN CALIFORNIA List of Brood Mares Owner Cebrian Is to Send to a New Hone in Kentucky. 11X, E. Jj.- McKENNEY: . . . SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., December 29. George H. Strate, superintendent of John H. Rosseters Wikiup Rancho. Sonoma County, gives a glowing report of the coming two-year-olds at the big stud establishment. Recent rains have helped materially in packing down the soil of the home training course built last fall and the youngsters are out gallopoug early every morning. tThe Friar Rocks especially move as though they are comers. The bay son of Friar Rock Catherine Carson, and the brown colt by Friar- Ttock Dorothy Gray, which may carry the burnt orange and. white stripes in the Epsom Derby of 1921, have not yet been asked to go fast, but their canters show enough to satisfy experts that they will go fast whenever aslted. The Friar Rock Watermelon and the Friar Rock La Patrie fillies, which have been nominated for the Epsom Oaks of 1921, also act like real runners. Strate said the twelve head owned by Mr. Kos-seter and the two mares owned by W. R. Coe that he brought from the east arrived in good condition. The two Coe mares are .to be bred to Friar Rock. The chestnut three-year-old Terentia, by Cicero Queenlet, is well known to race goers, having been one of the best two-year-olds of. her year. The bay three-year-old Polygon, by. Poly-mclus St. Claire II., was not raced much, but won. Pedigree students say the son of Rock Sand Fairy Gold is Just the stallion Jor the fillies, Terentia and Polygon were among the youns horses purchased by Mr. Coe a couple of years ago when lie bought the entire output of the English Sledmere Stud. Among the horses brought out by superintendent Strate were the brood marcs Sis Martin and Julia Bean, recently purchased by Mr. Rosseter. Passing Shower and Wedding Cake were also in the shipment. Albert Johnson and Harry Hamilton, the jockeys attached to the Rosseter stable, are visiting at home for the holidays. They will arrive at the ranch early in the year to gallop the coming two-year-olds. Johnsons home is in Spokane, Wash., while Hamilton lives in Texas. Edward Cebrian, owner of the Mira Monte Stock Farm, Santa Clara County, has engaged two cars in which to ship the stallion Von Tromp and his twenty-two brood mares to Kentucky. There were nearly forty brood mares on the farm at one time, but the young owner has been selling fast in the last year. Von Tronip and Troutbeck and the mares will be quartered at the Glen Helen Stud in Kentucky, the ovner retaining full control of all. Among the brood mares are some that Mr. Cebrian has often refused to sell. Three of the number are three-year-olds and will be bred for the first time the coining spring. Apparition is a chestnut filly, by Sweeper Banshee, by Irish Lad: Ballot Rose, a chestnut by Ballot Blush Rose, by Star Ruby, and Istar, a bay by Von Tromp Islitar, by Sam Lucas. HIGH OPINION OF MARE ASHTORETH. Mr. Cebrian has a high opinion of the bay mare Ashtorcth, by Von Tromp Ishtar.- Ashforeths first foal will come next year from Friar Rock. Islitar. dam of Ashtoreth, was bred at Rancho del Paso, and is :i half-sister to. Hamburg Belle. Isiac, dam of Islitar and Hamburg Belle, is a daughter of Isis, and Isis was by Bend Or Sliotover. one of the few fillies that ever won the Epsom Derby. Jourdain, another of the Cebrian mares, is the dam of Bon Jour, winner of the Clipsetta Stakes; Rosegal is the dam of American Ace; Isolation, the dam of Recluse. Lonely and other good outs, and Ruth W. is the dam of Cuyania. About ten of the mares will be bred, to Trout-heck his first season in America. Both Troutbeck anil Von Tromp will be allowed to serve twenty-five mares.
