LOS ANGELES RACING NEXT WEEK Thirty Days of the Sport Over theAiniide Track at the Ascot -Park Course. - tc-.v s y V Racing seems to be reviving on the coasts" There is no doubt, about its resumption at Tijuana January 24, but of more immediate interestlis rthe meeting of thirty days set to begin at Ascot January 4. Several short meetings there recently attracted heavy patronage, and Los Angeles seems keen for the sport. A board of stewards composed of T. .II. Dudley, president of the Bank of Santa Monica, mayor of Santa. Monica and member of the state board of agriculture; J. Myriek, Jr., for several years, treasurer and general manager of Ascot Park; George Middleton, formerly of Kohl and Middleton, Chicago, and well-known sportsman, and five, newspaper men, one from eacli of five Los Angeles newspapers, are in charge, with George Bentel, chairman of the Ascot Speedway Association, as general manager. The track is one of seven and a half furlongs, on the inside of the old Ascof track, which is now a paved speedway. It is claimed to be safe and fast and especially easy on horses witii bad legs. As to the general scope of expectations a Los Angeles communication " says: "Southern California is filled with tourists now. By January 4 it will be jammed. The announcement that Tijuana race track will reopen on January 24 will draw hundreds of horses, horsemen and jockeys to the coast, and a "great throng of those lovers of the sport who will travel a thousand miles to witness a good handicap will undoubtedly be in Los Angeles for the opening of the meeting. Business men of tiie city are known to look with favor upon the experiment. If the full thirty days are run, as- is confidently anticipated, with sustained interest and attendance, it is a certainty that horse racing will have received a new start in California . "What will follow is purely speculation; but it is expected that an effort will be made to pass a law in the state legislature legalizing betting on the pari-inutuel system approved in other states. "Manager Bentel promises clean, high-class racing. There will be six raees a day, the smallest purse 00. At least twice a week there will be high -class handicaps. Some surprise feature races are being planned. Some of the best stables in the country will be represented, including George Wing-fields, H. Stanfields and James Arthurs. .Every effort .is being made to bring a half dozsn or more of the best jockeys to ride at this meeting. To insure good work in the saddle the Ascot Association will add 15 to the 5 to bo paid by the owners for every winning mount, making 0 in all, or more than is paid for winning mounts in the east."
