PAIR OF KENTUCKY DERBY HOPES BEARING OF THE BREEDING OF HIGH COMMAND AND ANDPEACE PEACE PENNANT ON THEIR CHANCES FOR FORSUCCESS SUCCESS IN THE BIG RACE Only two High Command and Ioace Pennant so far as I am aware of tho Kentucky Derby candi ¬ dates are now stationed in Lexington and to these this morning I paid a visit but the intimation is an ¬ other eligible is to arrive ere long in Golden lroom lroomHigh High Command a golden chestnut homebred son of Tho Manager and tho Kentucky Oaks winner KllenaDalo has improved greatly in appearance during the winter months and has outgrown that rather coltish look which characterized him last season In fact High Command in appearance at least now looks the part of a really highclass race horse is not by any means overdone in tho way of condition just the right size plenty of length legs all under him a determined jaw strong muscular nock smooth of hip well sprung rili in every way a most attractive colt and bred by the way Kclipse to Herod Please do not understand me as saying that High Command can be clean wound up so early in the year as May S but judged both on appearance and pedigree he gives every indication of racing some time during the coming summer up to that form of which ho gave promise last June at Latonia Only twice so far has tho son of The Manager faced the starter In his first race ho was livaten two lengths over the best of the eastern division but this was not to be for something went wrong with tho works and the race course from that on has known him no more A winters rest however has set matters straight again and High Command is now apparently in tho best possible condition to undergo a searching preparation preparationHigh High Commands sire The Manager is reckoned by no loss an authority than otlicial handicapper Vosbtirgh to have been the best of his year and is a son of the Hermit horse Voter and a member of the best and most enduring of all of the American families that of Maria West WestTho Tho Manager is inbred to Kclipse Of Kclipse descent himself as are his first four dams is it any wonder then that he should sire a good one from the AllanaDale mare KllenaDale for AllanaIale is a grandson of the best exponent in this country of the Herod lino Hanover High Command traces in the female lino to Idlewild dam of Wildidlo and sister to Aerolite dam of Spendthrift the connecting link between Fair Play and Australian For some time past no really great horse has come from this family Kings Daughter half sister to KllenaDale probably the best but there is no reason to suppose that other good ones such as those that have gone before will not shortly make their appear ¬ ance and even though High Command so onrlx as May S may not bo able to do himself full justice there is every reason to believe that later along he will be a thorn in the side of the best of them Hermit rt jXewminster S Friars lalsam2 Seclusion f Voter 1 1f Mnirt of Dorset Hroadalbano I was slow in coining to hand and did not earn brackets until the Saratoga meeting was well advanced his initial suetess being deferred until August 28 Per ¬ haps Peace Pennants last winning race was his best in which after a stirring stretch duel conceding four pounds he outstayed Angon in the running of the Grand Hotel Handicap at Latonia Hardly Derby form this you will say but a study of Peace Pennants pedigree indicates improvement Mefiee Peace Pennants sire is bred rather top heavy Kclipse and his best the Kentucky Derby winner Donerail and tho stouthearted Kxterminator as might be expected are both sons of mares of Hindoo Herod de ¬ scent but Peace Pennant unlike tho two Derby winners is bred Kclipse to Matchem his dam Maltha being a daughter of the Hamburg Place sire Ogden his granddam Donna Ilonora by the onetime Nnr sery Stud premier Hastings and he himself a member of one of the best families of them all that of Queen Mary the immortal immortalPeace Peace Pennant as both his appearance and breeding suggest came slowly to hand last year in fact even yet there is room for improvement and he does not impress me as having done any too well during the winter recess He is however a likable bay plenty of size and length clean cut and sound rather light of neck one whose head resembles that of a gelding but one which raced as though stayin forte and one for which time should do much I therefore do not anticipate seeing Peace Pennant quite at his best so early in tho year as Kentucky Derby day War Pennant half brother to Peace Pennant by Jim Gaffney but for his ailing feet would I take it have last back end made it interesting for all of them and ho too seemed to develop but slowly Ho this as it may I expect to see War Pennant if his ailment has been successfully overcome one of the best of the older division and Peace Pennant too may not come to his best until his third season on the turf Maltha dam of this pair is herself through Ogden of Matchem descent as is her dam Donna Ilonora by Hastings and this double shot of Matchem blood right on tho top of the pedigree does not make for precocity Say what you will Wood lines are after all the best and surest guide to a horses attainments and capabilities but now that the sun is once more shining and the air soft and balmy Peace Pennant may improve out of nil knowledge in the Continued on second page PAIR OF KENTUCKY DERBY HOPES Continued from first page next few weeks and rapidly finish into a more substantial type of horse even though it would seem to be impossible for him to be
