PROGENY OF A GRAND FRENCH MARE MAREIt It is curious to contemplate the stud careers of some of the mares which were most famous on the turf and among them may surely be in ¬ cluded M Bouys Frenchbred mare Plaisantcrie which was a topsawyer as a threeyearold when she wound up a brilliant season by winning the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire tiie one under IOC pounds and the other under 121 pounds In each race she had notable winners behind her such as Florence Althorp Kinsky Raffaeh and Eu ¬ rasian in the Cesarewitch and Peinligo Eastern Emperor Thebais Prism Despair Duke of Rich ¬ mond Isobar Fulmeii Mlddiethorpe The Sailor Prince anil Kilcreene in the Cambridgeshire but she won both races in a canter and the second in particular was a fine performance In addi ¬ tion she ran thirteen times on UK Continent and was only once beaten when Martin Pccheur had a short head the best of her in the Prix du Prince de Guiles Among her victories was in ¬ cluded the Jubilee Prize of Baden She was a splendid mare by Wellington Poetess by Trocadero and was foaled in 1SS2 What hap ¬ pened between the close of her racing career and her purchase by Sir Tatton Sykes I cannot say but her stud career at Slcdincre was strangely intermittent As a speculation she proved a suc ¬ cess in spite of the fact that during her seven ¬ teen years she was seven times barren slipped her foal twice and had one dead leaving a bal ¬ ance of seven living foals These however in ¬ cluded some useful winners of which Childwick fetched 30000 as a yearling and won among other races the Cesarewitch and later became one of the most successful sires in France Raconteur a useful horse until lie turned roarer Ste Adresse and Hawkswick all sired by the AVelbeck celebrity realized respectively 15000 11500 and 1500 The AVag made 4050 Topiary 15000 and Jocatrix Plaisantcries last produce in IflOli 4100 Thus we have a total of 95150 for seven yearlings to set against ten failures Topiary by Orme in spite of many attempts only won one race for Ixird Hamilton of Dalzell who sold her with a colt foal by Bnshey Park and covered by Melton to go to America in lOOli when Mr August Belmont secured a fine bargain for three years later she produced the great horse Tracery to Rock Sand Phiisanterie was twentyfour years old when she was destroyed in 190U Vigilant in London Sportsman
