DAMASK STARTLES TURFMEN H P Whitneys Kentucky Derby Candidate in Sensational Work Goes Seveneighths in 132 45 45Over Over Muddy Track with About 130 Pounds in the Saddle LOUISVILLE Ky April 2 Damask Harry Pavne Whitneys Kentucky Derby candidate which is being trained by Mose Goldldatt fairly as ¬ tounded horsemen and work watchers at Churchill 1 owns thr morning when he indulged in a workout of seveneighths in l32 f over a track deep in mud and in the face of an unusually high wind It was by far the best work of any of the Derby prospects to date and the easy manner in which the colt ran in the sticky going made it all the more iiiros ivo ivoJockey Jockey E Ambrose was astride of Damask in his gallop Goldblatt gave him instructions to let the horse work seveneighths of a mile in the vicinity of 1HO After dismounting Ambrose said that he did not realize that the colt was running so fast and he was restraining him as best ho could Damask had on blinkers and Ambrose wore spurs The Jatter were used simply to keep the horse under control and one jab with them started him on his vya In the early months of this year Damask sienied to be a sluggish starter but now he lias overcome that habit and this morning he ran the first litlt milt of his workout in 50 seconds Ser vilor siiiother of the Whitney horses worked with him and his paccmnking was good for part of the way but Ambrose finally could not hold Damask back to him any longer longerVeteran Veteran horsemen who witnessed it said that the threeyearold could have gone a mile in 142 or close to that mark had Ambrose allowed him A heavy rain last night made the course worse than it has been in a long time but Damask skimmed over the track as though the soft going was made to order for him In his workout Damask wore heavy shoes without toes and carried easily 130 pounds Ambrose used a heavy training saddle and the rider himself is consideraldy alwve his natural riding weight weightTrainer Trainer Max Ilirsch had Donnacona and On Watch out He sent them a mile together in 159 Jockey Cliff Kohin on rode Donnacona while New ¬ ton Harrott was astride of On Watch The two horses were in the middle of the track all the way around and both were hard held It was Hirschs intention to give them a fairly brisk work but the fresh rain again caused him to alter his plans The two riders essayed to keep them n close together as possible and cither horse could have gone much faster On Watch did not dis ¬ play the inclination to loaf that marked his work several days ago agoTO TO TRY OUT PRINCE PAL TODAY
