CALIFORNIAS PAST RACING GLORY Some of It Recalled by the Recent Disguise Donna Winifreda Filly at Wikiup WikiupIV IV F L MKENNEV MKENNEVRAN RAN F1IANCISCO Cal April 1 Memories of olden days of racing in California cluster about the latest foal at Wikinp Itancho a finely formed filly by Disguise Donna Winifreda A halo of romance hangs over this young thoroughbred In Her veins is blood that brought fame to California as the nursery of great horses among her near and remote antecedents being the race course kings and queens of the West Donna Winifreda is a daugh ¬ ter of Dr Ioggu which captured the hearts of racegoers as a twoyearold to hold them stead ¬ fastly season after season Dr Leggo by Pinyear D Sevens won the Hunts Handicap and other big stakes and was one of the most popular horses that ever raced in California lie is a home prod ¬ uct foaled at A 15 Sprockels Xapa Stock Farm where he has been a successful sire for some years yearsSevens Sevens was a daughter of the imported stallion Watercress one of the noted sires that stood at J P Haggins Uanclio del Paso near Sacramento Sevens dam Folly was by Wildidle another sire that was a brilliant success when mated with mares owned by Californians Wildidle is remem ¬ bered principally as the sire of Flambeau the name of which is often linked with that of IJacine an ¬ other horse bred at Palo Alto Stock Farm by the late Senator Stanford StanfordPioneer Pioneer and recent breeding activities of the state are connected through Itoinnn I idy dam of Donna Winifreda as well as through Dr Leggo lirutus sire of Uoinan Kidy is the sire of scores of thoroughbreds that have done mighty tilings on the turf Hrutus was by Macgregor dam imported Teardrop by Scottish Chief one of a number of mares purchased in England by Senator Stanford The story goes that Senator Stanford thought Itrntus was undersized and his hocks not alto ¬ gether satisfactory so he sold him when a few months old It was the good fortune of Charles T Hoots to get Itrutns Of all the stallions that have ever stood in California Hrntus undoubtedly was the most successful sending out many win ¬ ners and his rons and daugnters hoying prowess u the stud studLATE LATE SENATOR STANFORDS AMBITION AMBITIONIt It was Senator Stanfords ambition to buy Isonomy but the English owner of the sou of Sterling Isola Holla would not part with him His agent did pick up however mares of the most fashionable blood of those days in Flirt Fairy Kose and Amelia Tin mares had been bred to Isonomy and it was hoped one of them might foal a colt that could be used in the stud All the foals were fillies much to the disappointment of Senator Stanford The dream of getting such a horse as Isinglass destined to be the sire of Star Shoot did not come true and Senator Stanford had to content himself with other sires siresThe The Flirt the Fairy Kose and the Amelia filly foals were good racers and valuable matrons and as the years went on the senator and governor found a great deal of pleasure in following their careers and those of their progeny The Flirt filly was none other than Gorgo which is remembered as having run third in the Suburban and as the winner of the Siren Stakes the Kecord Stakes and other important eastern races All distances were within the capacity of the fleet daughter of Isonomy Flirt Gorgo was the dam of good winners later on Among others of the offspring of Flirt were Flambeau Flirtation and Failstine all stake win Imported Fairy Itoso is remembered as the dam of Kacine the horse that broke Ten Hroccks long standing record for a mile and a great race horse Others of her produce were the flying Fairy and Kosomonde dam of Palo Alto a stallion that has been used the last few seasons at Poots Klmwood Stock Farm in mating with choicely bred mares belonging to A K Macomber Daughters of the mares Senator Stanford brought from England were much sought after by breeders as they were uni ¬ formly good producers Nowadays their grand ¬ daughters and greatgranddaughters are keeping up the good work
