GRAVESEND TRACK SOLD FOR 2250000 Its Ninety Acres to Be Cut Up for Building Mere Stables for Aqueduct NEW VOKK N V April L Tin Graveseiid track sale was closed last Wednesday afternoon when 4500 of the 5000 shares of stock were voted at a meeting of the Prooklyu Jockey Club and tin board of directors afterward made the sale to W E Harmon Co real estate dealers The price was S SiOOll iOOll per acre for the ninety acres a total of S2J50MIO The land will be subdivided and sold for building lots lotsThe The new owners will take possession immediately but the track will not be demolished nor the stables torn down for three months James Shevlin presi ¬ dent of tlie Itrooklyn Jockey Club and of the Queens County Jockey Club Aqueduct course inserted this clause in the contract in order to protect the horse ¬ men who have stables there He insisted that they receive plenty of time in whcich lo find new quar ¬ ters Stabling on the property are more than 300 thoroughbreds belonging to prominent sportsmen sportsmenMoie Moie stables are to be erected at once at Aqueduct to accitmmcdate the hordes now stabled at Prooklyh ProoklyhTin Tin Gravesend track was one of the oldest in Xev York It is situated at Kings Highway and Ocean Parkwav and Gravesend avenue It was originally the Prospect Park Fair Grounds on which trotting races were held for several years In 1SS5 it lost some of its ground to make way for the Parkway and the next year the remainder was sold for a few dollars an acre to Phil and Mike Dwyer Kich ard Hyde and Louis lichman of the old theatrical firm of Hyde Hehman John McCarthy and James Shevlin Mr Shevlin is the only one of the or ¬ ganizers alive aliveIn In 18S7 the new owners organized the llrooklyn Jockey Club and held its first meeting Saturday May il of that year Its feature was the Urooklyn Handicap It drexv a record crowd to the course and furnished one of the most thrilling of thorough bred contests Dry Monopole Itluc Wing and Hidalgo were the placed horses Dry Monopole was the victor a head in front of Itlne Wing which was a similar distance before Hidalgo HidalgoFrom From 1 87 until 1 10 when the repeat of the Percy ray law caused it to close its gates Graves end was one of the most famous and popular courses in America At it turf history was made almost every year
