M AN 0 WARS GREATEST RACE Displays Marvelous Speed in De ¬ feating John P Grier Breaks All Existing Records for forOne One Mile and an Eighth Tremont to Inchcape NEW YORK N Y July 10 The presence of Wan o War and John P Gricr alone without the added interest of the Tremont Stakes was suffi ¬ cient to attract a throng fully equaling if not sur ¬ passing any attendance this year at the popular Aqueduct track trackWitii Witii sixtyone nominations embracing the best threeyearolds in the country the Dwyer Stakes formerly the Brooklyn Derby and renamed in honor of the late Philip Dwyer but one had the temerity to face Man o War the equine king of the Amer ¬ ican turf of his age and that one John P Grier trained by a most astute trainer and conceded an undeniable chance by the shrewdest of handicap pers at the weights sallied forth at post time to give battle to the mighty champion championThe The ovation tendered Man o War on his ap ¬ pearance was a thunderous one but nothing com ¬ pared to that given him when he returned to the winners circle after breaking the American track record for the distance The race was a most thrilling one the two horses running as a team throughout until shortly after passing the six ¬ teenth post where John P Grier tired and Man o War drew away but was ridden out to win by a length and a half halfThe The history of the Dwyer or Brooklyn Derby is an Interesting one dating back to 18S7 when the mighty Hanover with Jimmy McLaughlin in the 8addlewori f It was only appropriate for Miiti d Wars name to be added to its list of winners as his daddy Fair Play won the same race in 1908 A brief list of the Dwyer winners follows Year Horse Wt Jockey Value Time 1009 Joe Madden 120 K Dugan 9225 237 237J010 J010 Dalmatian 122 CHShilling 2300 207 of the Dwyer running John P Jrier is conceded to be a really highclass colt Yet Man o War gave him eighteen pounds and from a five to a sevenpound beating in record time Kiiniiner was asked if John P Grier had ever headed him He had his head in front of me for a moment nt the eighth pole was the reply But the moment I went after Man o War in earnest he went right along about his business Was lie all in Well when horses run like tliey did from the start something has to crack and while I would not like to say how much he had left there was enough to go on and give another horse a battle had there been one in the race able to give us a challenge challengeIt It was the greatest race seen hereabouts in the opinion of everybody and the record crowd which came from all parts of the country to see it was delighted Among those who viewed it with pager interest was Major Belmoilt the colts breeder breederFASTEST FASTEST TIME ON RECORD RECORDThe The champion set a dazzling pace throughout running the quarter in 23 the half in 40 the threequarters in 109 the mile in 130 and the mile and an eighth in 149 a new American rec ¬ ord The previous record was onefifth of a second slower nnd made over the same course by Borrow and equaled by Boots at the spring meeting of 1917 The former had up 117 pounds while Boots carried 137 It was a wonderful race all the way however and there is no doubt in the minds of the experts that Man o War can lower every record on the books The best mile and an eighth to the credit of an English horse is 150 made by the threeyearold Brown Prince at Newmarket in 1917 with 105 pounds in the saddle while the best Australian record is 152 152Another Another Man o War wis the universal opinion after Inchcape had won the Tremont Stakes which attracted the cream of the twoyearold division in tlie East In preparation for the nice the win ¬ ner worked a quarter of a mile in 21 and the oldest trainers say that this is something no horse except Man o War has done in this part of the country If we keep on breeding that kind of thoroughbreds them will be no necessity of going abroad for real race horses was the comment of Preston Btirch who viewed the race with trainer Fred Burlew from the upper part of the stand IiichvaiH was a trifle slow at the post and John ¬ son had to whip him away from the barrier but once he got going he ran away from his company witli the greatest of ease He was timed the first five furlongs in 58 and he is a really highgrade twoyearold twoyearoldII II P Whitneys Broom Spun raced courageously all the way but tired from his efforts to overtake the flying leader and barely saved second place from Jog There was considerable interference in the homestretch for Kirklevington Dimmesdale Hoiiyhnhnm and Touch Me Not and all were not persevered with through the last eighth eighthThe The Tremont is another old turf fixture being first run in 1887 Man o War won it last year Its interesting history since 1908 follows approved English theory of returning the best blood of the dam to the best blood of the dam of the sire In this case it was Bend Or blood that was wanted Friar Rocks dam is Fairy Gold by Bend Or while Rose of Gold the dam of Inelicape is by Goldfinch a descendant of Bend Or through Ormonde As Man o War is by Fair Play a son of Fairy Gold it was a great day for the old chestnut mare for which Major August Belmont paid 10000 in England EnglandS S C Uihlreth SOIIIH days ago offered 50000 for Inchcijpc He was told that 100000 would not tempt Mr Rosseter to part with the sou of Friar Rock Among the
