COMMENT ON GRAND PRIX WINNER NEW YORK N Y July 10 The result of the Grand Prix said II K Knapp a steward of Tlie Jockey Club yesterday gives added force to the recently published renarks of Frank K Sturgis f the breeding bureau of The Jockey Club as to the desirability of breeding to families which have demonstrated their possession of stamina and con stitution In the Derby a threeyearold the produce of the mare Ilammerkop which has been raced over long distances of ground during a long period scored a notable victory The fact that the second horse in that race was of the produce of tlie winner of the Oaks which had already pro ¬ duced the winner of the St Leger was perhaps a coincidence but what are you going to do about it when the granddam of Orpheus third in that race appears strongly in the pedigree of both Spion Kop winner of the Derby and Comrade win ¬ ner of the Grand Prix I refer to the mare Sirenia which is the dam of Sourabaya the mother of Comrade This mare is a sister to Ilammerkop being by Gallinule Concussion ConcussionThere There is another fact in connection with the Grand Prix which is of interest to breeders con ¬ tinued 3Ir Knapp and that is that the sire of Comrade the Irish horse Bachelors Double is of the product of Lady Jiawn which was a twin Twins as a rule are not considered desirable for either racing or breeding but Lady Bawn bred to Tredennis foaled Bachelors Double which won the Irish Derby the City and Suburban Handicap the Royal Hunt Cup and the Kempton Park Jubi ¬ lee When a fouryearold he was priced to an American sportsman at 30000 30000Comrade Comrade as a twoyearold had a clean slate capturing three victories out of as many starts His first race was at Newmarket on July when he won the Sales Stakes a five furlongs and 140 yards event On September 19 of the same year iomrade led the field at Lingfield in the 3Ioor OKn Two YearOld Plate in which he was the favorite against fourteen opponents His third ap ¬ pearance that year was in the Great Sapling Stakes at Sandown Park on October 24 Ridden by J H Martin an American jockey Comrade had little trouble in annexing first honors honorsHis His previous race this year before the Grand Prix was at Hurst Park where on 3Iay 1 he won the Paradise Plate one mile and a quarter The margin of victory was four lengths lengthsComrade Comrade a brown colt by Bachelors Double Sourabaya was purchased as a yearling by Mr I P Gilpin at Tattersalls Newmarket sale Sep lember 10 1918 for 125
