YONKERS LARGfST CROWD Sees H P Whitneys Wildair tri ¬ umph in Empire City Derby Huribus Winner in Whirl Stakes the Highly Considered Broom BroomSpun Spun Finishing Unplaced NEW YORK X Y July 17 All attendance records for the Yonkers course were shattered today when n crowd that filled the grandstand to over ¬ flowing the lawns and even tlic infield passed through the gate of the Empire City Racing Asso ¬ ciation track to see the decision of the Empiro City Derby and Whirl Stakes the headliners of an attractive program Only three faced the barrier in the Derby Wildair Gladiator and Donuacoua and they fin ¬ ished in the order named after a brilliantly con ¬ tested race Gladiator was not favcred by the betting public and away quickly set a fast pace but Lyko took him wide at the first turn carry in Donnacona out Donnacona was benefited how ¬ ever at the stretch turn where Lyke again went wide witli Gladiator and forced Wildair out At this point Barrett brought Donnacona to the inside rail saving at least a couple of lengths It looked as if Donnacona would win nn eighth out but Ambrose brought Wildair up with a determined rush and soon had Donnacoiia beaten Gladiator cpme again under punishment the last fifty yards and got up in the last few strides to defeat Don ¬ nacona for second money moneyT T W OBriens Pluribns won the Whirl Stake the secondary feature of the card Broom Spun supposed to be one of H Whitneys best ivn yearitild colts was nn oddson choice for the race but was never prominent in the running R T Wilsons Knight of the Heather was first away getting off quickly and setting the puce to the stretch bend where he tired 1luribus was a trailer until an eighth cut where he moved up rapidly on the outside and won by two lengths from Dirk Horse which had been prominent in the stretch run Ilalu another trailer caught Broom Spun and the others tiring and got up for third money easily Ballynew showed early speed but tiring when the real racing began finished last lastTames Tames Ackerman formerly a member of the official clocking staff on the Kentucky tracks was nn arrival at Kmpire City He has the twoyear old Draftsman by Top Hat Dragnet half brother to Drastic and Deckmate The colt is being trained by Kay Spence SpenceDave Dave Heiman who lias been connected with M Mahoneys parimutiiel crew on the Canadian tracks was a visitor at Kmpire City He reports that the crowds on ail the Canadian courses are unprece ¬ dented dentedJockey Jockey Lawrence Lyke star of the western jock ¬ eys this year is proving a revelation to metro ¬ politan race goers His handling of Kashmir Friday and of Pickwick in the opening dasli was an ex ¬ ample of his superior horsemanship
