FEW HORSES AT LOUISVILLE TRACKS Majority of Kentucky o tables Racing in Canada Twenty Simms Yearlings at Douglas Park LOUISVILLE Ky July 17 Fewer thorough ¬ breds than usual are spending the summer months t Churchill Downs and Douglas Park this year and both courses are more deserted than at any time in recent years The resumption of racing in Canada is responsible for this as a number of stables which remained here for several summers past sire now actively engaged in the Dominion and they will remain across the border until the sport is resumed in Kentucky in the autumn autumnIncidentally Incidentally this is the first summer in a long while that some improvements were not being made at Churchill Downs The erection of the new grandstand last spring together with the other changes made in the plant brought it up to a standard where further work on it was unnecessary The only room for improvement is on the track proper which needs reselling but this will not be I attempted until after the autumn meeting meetingAmong Among the stables which came back here from Latonia were those of Dan Lehan Joe Umensetter C C Van Meter W W Dardcn and R P Dick Brooks The horses in these establishments will remain here until time to go to Lexington in Sep ¬ tember temberAlex Alex B Gordon lias three horses under his care here belonging to Frank C Bain Among them is the good threeyearold Patches which fell lame last spring soon after he had shown him ¬ self to be a fairly good racer Gordon says lie is hopeful of getting him in condition to race at Latonia next autumn autumnBert Bert Williams has twenty yearlings at Douglas Park which he is breaking for Edward F Simms They were bred by Mr Simms and are a good looking band bandYearlings Yearlings are scarce at both of the local tracks right now unlike in former years when they were numerous at this season of the year George J Long lias not brought his youngsters in from Bash ford Manor Farm as yet and his plans regarding them are still in the making The division of the Long stable in charge of trainer Pete Coyne is still at Latonia while John C Ferriss took a number of the Long horses to Windsor WindsorJockey Jockey Jack Hanover is spending a few days va ¬ cation here He plans to KO to his home in New York shortly and may ride at Saratoga or in Canada the latter part of the summer summerRacing Racing secretary William II Shelley is at his home here for the summer He had been in liar ness steadily since last September when the Lex ¬ ington autumn meeting began beganSherman Sherman Goodpaster secretary and treasurer of the Kentucky Jockey Club paid a visit here on business connected with the racing association I have seen some great race meetings said Good paster but never one to compare with that which just ended at Latonia LatoniaEven Even this early track superintendent Tom Young is beginning to receive applications for stabling room for the autumn meeting at the Downs which will extend from November 2 to November 13 Several of them are from eastern owners who only ship to Kentucky for the biijr stakes and this indicates that the rich races will be as much sought after as ever by the New Yorkers next autumn
