HAMILTON FAVORITES FAIL i Verity the Surprise of the Day and at Long Odds. i n Owners at Hamilton Compromise Their Controversy with the Port Erie Management. -ti i " t HAMILTON, Ont., August .".The program at Hamilton this afternoon was made up of a series of claiming races in which the fields were composed of the poorer class of horses. Surprises were the order, a majority of the favorites being beaten. The biggest upset of the afternoon came when Verity won the fourth race, beating Bond and Buck-board out in a driving finish. Verity paid 1.40 in the mutuels. Keltie, a product of the Hendrie stud outside of Hamilton, made an exhibition of her opponents in the opening race, a dash of three quarters for Canadian bred maidens. The controversy between the horsemen and the Niagara Jockey Club regarding the purse offerings at Fort Erie has been adjusted. The management submitted two fair propositions to the horsemen and the latter will hold a meeting in the paddock at the Hamilton track tomorrow to ratify the agreement. W. J. Rawlson has taken over Jockey F. Brysoris book and will make his engagements at Fort Erie. W. p. Eraser, secretary of the Ontario Jockey Club, was a visitor this afternoon. Lazy Lou was claimed out of the fourth race by AVr3f. Cain for ,900. A At the conclusion of the Hamilton meeting Fred W Gerhnrdy will leave for Saratoga to distribute the; blanks for the stakes to be run at the Windsor meeting the latter part of August. The Windsor JoCkey Qlub is offering an attractive array of stakes for its meeting, two with ,500 added and three with ,000 added. The smallest amount added to any of the overnight purses will be ,500. Skye Ball was cut down so badly in his race yesterday that he will be destroyed. The slake blanks for the races to close to be run at the Blue Bonnets meeting at Montreal and the stakes to be run at the Woodbine Park meeting at Toronto have been distributed "among the horsemen by Joseph McLennan. Both of these associations will feature steeplechases and tin extra effort will be made to induce owners of crosscountry horses to "participate at both; 11,500 will be distributed by the Ontario Jockey Club during the seven days racing at its course. Slim Ownbey. accompanied by jockey Heinisch, came over from Fort Erie this morning. The W. F. Knebelkamp, R. I. Williams, Koine Respes iind Edward F. Whitney racers have arrived at Forf Erie from Windsor. It. F. Carman, with eight, including Carmandale, and J. Wagnon with eight of the Pelican Stable horses, including Pana-man and The Boy, are arrivals at Fort Erie from New York. Owen Pons has obtained a contract on Brooks, a Hamilton lad, who was seen with the colors up recently. Wildair and several other of the Harry Payne Whitney horses are expected at Fort Erie. Wildair is a candidate for the 0,000 Dominion Handicap to be rim on the opening day of the meeting. The mutuel department at Fort Erie has been rearranged sce the previous meeUng, and an equal number of machines have beeif et aside to handle both American and Canadian money. This should prove a great convenience to the clubs patrons. Peter Sehpffel, a Cincinnati lad under contract to W. F. Knebelkamp, had his first mount this afternoon. John J. Farrell, whose horses are racing at this meeting, was an arrival from Montreal.
