THIS YEARS EPSOM DERBY HERO SOMEWHAT REMARKABLE LINEAGE OF SPON KOP IN REGARD TO GREAT STAYERS CLOSE UP ON BOTH SIDES OF HIS PEDIGREE By EXILE . The Derby winner Spion Kop, the property of Major G. Loder;- is a. bay by Spearmint Hammcrkop, by Gallinule. Spion Kop was bred by Major Eustace Lodcr and, klthough .be took .part in six races as a two-year-old, failed to register brackets.. .The. best he could do was, to finish second and this feat lie accomplished no less than four times, running second to Pelops for .the Hamptoh Court Two-Year-Old Plate to Firework for the Prince ;of Wales Nursery of 1,000 at Dpneaster, to Swynburn for the Aling-ton Plate, Newmarket, and over the same course to Tetricus for the Free Handicap, and therefore, as a juvenile, could well lay claim to the title of Prince of Seconds. This year, however, there is an entirely different story to tell, for Spion Kop, to begin with, won the Spelthorne Three-Year-Old Plate of one and one-half, miles on "Jubilee Day" at Kempton Park in irreproachable style, being out by. himself after the first mile had been run, finishing well ahead of Saffron and -Stronghold. Subsequent to his Spelthorne victory English critics were loud in their praise of the masterful manner of Spion Kops, success, and Sporting Life of May 10 has this to say of his victory: "Few Spearmints. arc seen at their best as two-year-olds and Spion Kop was not one of them. He has done well this spring and the way.hc landed the odds, on him at Kempton suggests the possibility that lie may be the best of Gilpins for the Derby. In any case, like his. sire and. dam,, the latter being Hammerkop, he is bred to stay and his line stamina may stand him in good stead at Epsom." Spion Kops sire. Spearmint, won. the Derby and, on crossing to France, proved too much for Main-tenon and others in the running of the. Grand Prix, but after his French win the son of Carbine did not again face the starter. As a sire Spearmint has attained to a fair measure of success. Among Jus progeny are the .Saratoga Cup nnd Lawrence Realization winners -Johren and Over There in this country, and the best of his English winners are Catmint, Lance Chest, Breakspear. Mr. John Sanfords The Cur-ragh and Flying Spear. Silesia, his daughter, is the dam of the Oaks winner My Dear. Hammerkop is a twenty-year-old daughter of the champion brood mare sire Gallinule and, perhaps, the best race uag the son of Isonomy ever sired, winning, as she: dlft. as a three-year-old, .the May Plate at Kempton Park and Yorkshire Oaks, but, unlike many of the progeny of Gallinule, Hammerkop showed marked improvement with increasing years, and as a four-year-old won. the Great Yorkshire. Handicap, Old St. Leger course, of 975, but Hammerkop was not at her hest until as a five-year-old she beat Palmy Days and Maximum II. for the. Alexandra Plate, nearly .three miles, at Ascot, and carried 121 pounds home to victory for the Cesarewltch. As a six-year-old Hammerkop repeated her success in the Alexandra Plate, but up until the appearance of Spion Kop had foaled nothing of especial excellence. Hammerkop, however, is one of the good racing marcs which have also attained to distinction, along with, such as Lily Agnes, Alice Hawthorn and Beeswing, as brood .marcs. Spion Kop- is. a member of the No. 19 Bruce Lowe family, and from this same Yertumna by Stockwell branch come Gallinule, the Oaks winner Snow Marten, Siberia, Elcctra, that good French race horse and sire Upas, Pioneer, St. Victrix, Llangibby, etc. , t Toxophilitc 3 J Long Bow 21 E 3 J . 1 Dau. of. 3 Pantaloon.....
