ENGLISH THOROUGHBRED CROSSING Why Mares Wero Selected to Be Bred to The Panther. William Allison of the London Sportsman, a keen writer and pedigree expert, last winter bought five beautifully bred mares solely with a view of mating them with The Panther. They have gone witli tiie horse to South America. The marcs were: Sixpenny, by William the Third Montem, by Ladas; in foal to Lemberg. Night Shadow, by Martagon Atropia, bv Florizel II. Song, by Spearmint Chnunt, by Chaucer, her dam Jiona Dca, by Martagon Agave; in foal to Beppo. First Attempt, by Symington Maiden Wrangler, by Baliol. Rue Time, by John oGaunt Meadow Rue, by Suiiifoin. The Panthers pedigree is as follows: I fuoek Pll"foi Sffi::!l:::!: I fb Anoqucbrune . ; gti" Col f Jrmonde 15 -S? 2 I . . Cvl,rl!l After buying the marcs Mr.- Allison offered a prize for the best answer to UkJ question of "Why were the mures bought to mate with the sou of Tracery Countess 2iu?" Englishmen are keen about pedigrees and thoroughbred mating possibilities, and a lot of answers were sent in. Tiiis one took the prize. It was from H. Hogarth of the Shafford Stud, Chihlwickbtuy: In looking at the pedigree of The Panther we find it made up witli some good stout outside families through Tracery 19, Gallinule 19 and Collar 10. and farther back we get two crosses of St. Simon aniLj ids sister of No. 11. TakingIhie Time you return the stout blood through vhei- sire, viz., Isinglass and Isouomy 19; also through Jtiiver, Tbxophilite. Musket; also the Agnes family 10 through La Fleehes sire, St. Simon 11. This mare lins a successful tap root. In Night Shadow we get Martagon 1C to that of Collar and St. Simon through Florizel II. In combining the pedigree of The Panther and Song I should expect the result of the alliance to make a gcod stayer. Song being by Spearmint 1, Carbine 2 and Musket 3. Martagon 10 is here again; also St. Simon 11. This family tap-root is to the fore through Gay Crusader, and the pedigree is made up of No. 1 blood, yet of stout breeding, and it relieves the 19 and 10 families In that of The Panther. Now, taking First Attempt we get inbreeding to Galopin through Symington, which returns in The Panther through St. Simon and Angelica, by Galopin 3. but to tone this blood down we get in more sober blood through Balliols sire, Blair Atliol 10. and Trenton 18 and Musket 3. In looking at the pedigree of Sixpenny, this does hot strike me as being quite so stout as some of the others. We have a good stayer in her sire. William the Third, and getting his sire again, viz., St. Simon. The tap-root in also a No. 11. The successful No. 1 family, comes in through Ladas, dam IUuminata, and the stout families of Tile Panther should combine well with that of Sixpenny. The selections appear to me to. be mares that Avould. return good staying powers through Musket and the Agnes .family, yet relieved witli the St. Simcu and Galopiu blood to nick with those in that of The Panther.
