"LUCKY" BALDWIN COLORS IN REVIVAL BY F. L. McKENNEY. SAN FRANCISCO. Cal., September 7. Tlie famous colors of tlie late E. J. "Lucky" Baldwin red and black and Maltese cross are to be seen on the turf once more. Anita M. Baldwin, daughter of the noted California horseman, lias six thoroughbreds in training at the home course at Santa Anita and plans are under way for more young horses to be taken up soon. It is expected the string will be raced at the fairs in California this fall and probably at one of the winter tracks later on. Mrs. Baldwin lias kept up her interest in the thoroughbred throughout her life and is enthusiastic about getting into tlie great sport. The achievements of Baldwin -owned horses fill quite a spa.e in the history of American racing. Starting out with horses purchased from Theodore Winters forty years ago, Mr. Baldwin built up one of the most successful stud establishments in the United States. "Lucky" was not afraid in the least, either, to race his runners against tlie best the East coald breed and many a stirring contest resulted, with most of the honors falling to the doughty Cnlifornian. The stallion Grinstead, bought by Mr. Baldwin at a good figure, was a veritable gold mine in siring stake winning progeny. Other sires did their part in bringing glory to the California haras. Tlie Baldwin colors were first four times in the American Derby, a record unrivaled in racing in tliis country. The Derby was at a mile and a half and it took a high-class horse to get home ahead of all tlie topnotchers that invariably started in tlie race. Volanto won the big race in 3885, Silver Cloud in 188.0, Emperor of Norfolk in 3883 and Roy el Santa Anita in 1894. Emperor of Norfolk was never beaten at three years by a horse of his own age, winning, in addition to the Derby, the Sheridan Stakes, tlie Drexel Stakes and other worth-while races. He went on to great distinction as a sire and right now his daughters are in Kreat demand for broodmares. Among the large number of winners bred by Mr. Baldwin were tlie mare Los Angeles, winner of the Latonia Derby and Kansas City Derby and many other stakes: and Lucky B.. winner of the Saratoga Cup. Volante, American Derby winner, also won tlie Saratoga Cup, then a race at two miles and a quarter. Los Angeles was a marvelous campaigner, winning forty-eight races. On a heavy track she could beat about any horse in traiuing of her day at a mile and over.
