AN OUTSIDERS FUTURITY Rich Race Unexpectedly Falls to the Filly Step Lightly. Prudery Unplaced and Badly Beaten Man o War Makes New Record at Mile and a Half. NEW YORK, X. Y., September 11. Futurity day brought 25,000 racing enthusiasts to Belmont Park this afternoon to sec the thirty-first running of the richest two-year-old fixture in America, which this year was worth 5,870 to the winner, ,500 to second and ,250 to the third. Of the original nineteen named overnight to start for the Futurity only one was withdrawn, the II. P. Whitney colt Exodus, leaving that stable with the two fillies Prudery and Crocus as an entry and the favorites at a short price. The track was lightning fast and weather conditions delightful. Jockeys on all the eighteen starters when they passed the big throng on the lawn and in the grandstand and on the way to the post wore brand new colors. The racy looking juvenile thoroughbreds with their flash of bright colors brought applause from the thousands of spectators. After nine minutes at the post starter Mars Cassidy sent the "-field away well aligned. Looking up the long straightaway the field came on like a squadron of cavalry. Every rider was plying his whip, using hands and all the knowledge he possessed to get all the speed possible out of his mount. As the field came in sight .T. K. L. Ross Star Voter was TJialnlr seen in front. Seventy yards outr jockey" Frank Keogli, riding as he never did before, on-the filly Step Lightly, urged his mount into the lead and won by a length, with Star Yoter second and Grey Lag third. Prudery and Crocus, odds-on favorites, coupled as the H. P. Whitney entry, ran far below expectations. They were off well, but neither showed its often demonstrated speed and both were practically outpaced all the way. Man o War had one horse to beat. Damask, in the Jockey Club Stakes at one mile and a half. Ha beat Damask away off and easily hung up a new American record for the distance, 2:28,. The wonder horse was under restraint and the first half of the race was slow, the first half in 49, three-quarters in 1:14 if,. Then he was allowed to strike out more freely and the mile was rim in 1:38, mile and un eighth in 1:5136, mile and a half in 2:28. . Ten ordinary platers faced the starter in the opening dash, with Cum Sah the winner and the favorite. Locust Leaves cut out the running, followed closely by Cum Sah. which was under restraint. When the field straightened out in the stretch, jockey Robinson brought Cum Sah into the lead and won by two lengths. Locust Leaves and Our Nephew ran second and third at long odds. Flying Orb was the medium of heavy backing, but raced badly. Only three started in the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap, with Square Dealer ruling favorite at : odds-on. The winner turned up in Wisest Fool, which led throughout. Square Dealer was his closest attendant until in the hint round of the field, where he broke down between the thirteenth i nnd fourteenth jumps. Jockey Powers made a move to go into the lead with Square Dealer when he ! suddenly wavered. Wisest Fool and Skibbereen i fought out the finish with the former winning by a length and a half. S. C. Ilildreths Cirrus worked one mile in 1:37, three-quarters in 1:12, In preparation for Mondays handicap. B. A. Lane claimed Lads Love from the Green -tree Stable out of the first race under the French 1 rnles for ,705 nnd he was withdrawn.
