PEN ROSE DEFEATS MILKMAID Too Much Weight Brings Downfall of Gallant Ross Filly in Main Race at Havre. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., September 22. J. K. L. Ross" gallant filly Milkmaid attempted to concede twenty-one pounds to the speedy Pen Rose in the running of the Suffragette Handicnp at the Havre track today, but failed after a game effort. Pen Rose rushed to the front soon after the start, with Milkmaid in close pursuit. They maintained that order until passing the mile post, when Milkmaids heavy impost began to tell. In the last sixteenth Schnttinger shook up Pen Rose and the daughter of Sweep, although swerving out, easily drew away from the tiring Milkmaid. The latter barely saved second place from the fast closing Rubidium, the only other starter. Another large crowd was present this afternoon and witnessed some excellent racing under ideal weather and track conditions. E. B. McLeans Flying Welshman scored a popular victory in the fourth vacs defeating Phantom Fair after a stubbornly contested struggle, the outcome of which was in doubt until the last few strides. . J. II. Shreve furnished the winner of the first race in his King James filly Dolly C, which led home Lmighlnnd and Toss Up, the two most favored in the speculation. Corey rode a strong finish on the winner. Fourteen platers met in the second race and Allah, after practically setting the pace throughout, was returned the winner, witli Kirah and Happy Go Lucky second and third respectively. Withdrawals removed several of the more formidable entries to the third race, leaving Mumbo Jumbo the favorite. The old gelding despite his heavy impost made good, but was tiring at the end and his winning margin was but a head.
