IN READINESS AT LATONIA Large Fields and a Fast Track Augur Fine Racing Today. Twenty Fast Ones Named to Start in Main Race of the Day Many Arrivals. BY .T. L. DEMPSEY. LATONIA. ICy., September 28. La tenias an- tumn racing, lasting for a period of twenty-eight lays, to be inaugurated tomorrow, will be ushered in under most favorable conditions, -with pleasant weather and fast track in prospect. As the opening day card is an unusually good one, a record attendance should be on bund to view- the first days sport. The limit number permitted here is entered in nearly all the dashes, with the Latonia Handicap of ,000 added the feature of the card, leading in respect ot declared starters, for twenty of the best have been named by their respective owners as likely to strive for the rich prize. There is certain to be at least a dozen making the contest and at the weight assignments a rattling contest is in prospect. The three-quarters handicap preceding the feature is also of more than passing- interest, for among those carded here are some of the fleetest in the sprinting division. A heavy storm late yesterday afternoon did not affect the track to any considerable extent, for the going was fairly firm this morning and its steady improvement will cause it to be fast for tliei dash. , initial.. ..- - .4 - .a..:-. Arrivals today were again numerous and the eon - stent influx caused congestion in the matter of stalls anil "the stables on the outside of the track bail to be put into use. Some confusion was entailed by the arrivals of sever.il owners who bad not given notice of their coming and no assignment of stall space hnd been made for them. They found quarters adjacent to the track. No matter of detail has been overlooked toward making the opening a success and the inauguration of the racing will be routine as if no interruption had occurred since the close July 10. WOULD HAVE OFFERED 00,000. General manager Matt J. Winn came back this morning from New York, where he had gone on nti urgent business call and also with a view to securing the Man o War-Sir Barton race, for which he made an offer of 575.000 and a 5,000 gold cup and Would have gone to 00,000 had he been given an "opportunity o bid on a competitive basis. As he was informed he would, he was keenly disappointed that Kentucky failed to secure the attraction. There seems to have been considerable misunderstanding with respect to the bid, though there should not have been, for the press recorded the 5,000 offer and Mr. Winn made the sum plain to Mr. Bedwell in their conversation over the phone. That the 5,000 offer must have been understood is evidenced in the raise by the Kc.nllworth track management from the original offer of 0,000 to .r,,000. There will be no shortage of riders here, for seventy Jockeys have registered with the secretary. Frank .7. Kelly, who is going to campaign a considerable stable here this fall, is among the recent arrivals from Chicago. There will be a big increase of horses here from Canada when the racing in the Dominion comes to n Close. The military handicap, to be run October 7, and which will be at one mile, is attracting considerable attention. It will be for horses three years old and over for a purse of ,000, of which 00 will go to the second and 00 to the third. The United States government to have the option for seven days of purchasing the winner for 50. The winner, if not taken by the government, to be ineligible to any race of a similar character. Entries accepted at any time prior to. publication of weights. Announcement was made today that the Latonia Championship Stakes would he decided October 23.
