COMING TO LATONIA SOON Eastern Candidates for Latonia Championship Stakes Expected in Kentucky Shortly. LATONIA. Ky., September 28. With the Latonia meeting at hand it is expected that some of the eastern candidates for the rich Latonia Championship Stakes will soon be headed toward this section. Quite a few of them have stake engagements to fill at Latonia before the big three-year-old race is to be run, and as they Will incur no penalties in the Championship, it is more than likely that they will be seen in action several times before that event. The Harry Piiyne Whitney stars which are eligible for the Championship are entered" in practically every stake on the Latonia roster. Recent developments indicate that it is going to be a hard task to keep the Whitney establishment from winning the big race, as John P. Grier, Wildair and Upset are in their best form, while even Damask appears to have taken a brace and is showing to much better ndvantage than at any time since last winter. Trainer James Rowe has not announced what horses he will send to Latouia for the rich affair, but it will not be a hard job for him to pick worthy representation, as he has nothing else to choose from. Cleopatra is a certain starter iu the Championship, barring an accident, and this filly can be depended upon to hold her own against her rivals of the opposite sex. At present time it looks as though she will be the only filly in the race, and this will result in her getting a three pounds allowance. Colts and geldings have to carry 122 pounds, while fillies are asked to shoulder 119. The route of one und three-quarter miles will be to the liking of the daughter of Corcyra, as she has always" shown her best efforts over a long distance of ground. It looks as though the West will have to depend exclusively upon Best Pal, E. R. Bradleys son of Helmet Padula. He is going along splendidly in his training and gives every indication of being equal to the occason of running such a long route as the Champonship Stakes will be over. The other western eligibles do not seem to call for a whole lot, and unless Best Pal wins, the big stake will go to the East, the same as many others have, gone in the past few years. Former Congressman G. W. Loft will have a strong hand to play in the Championship Stakes iii On Watch, which finished third in the Kentucky Derby last spring. This colt is a whole lot better now than be was then, and he is another that will find the long route to his liking. Should the track 1k muddy on the day the stake is run he will be more formidable than ever. Ijist year On Watch made a trip to Kentucky and fairly run awav with a two-year-old stake in the mud.
