FAST RACING AT LAT0N1A High Cost Defeats Marjorie Hynes In His Old-Time Form. i Iwin First in a Close Finish with Furbelow Some Grand Contests Expected Today. LATONIA, Ky., October 1. Close and fast racing was the rule here this afternoon despite the cold bleak weather that prevailed. The attendance also snowed improvement over yesterday. The evenly matched fields served as good speculative mediums, but favorites again were downed with regularity. The mile handicap for a purse of ,000 for fillies, developed a rattling finish between Iwin and Furbelow, the Bradley representative winning in the last, few strides. Regalo was the one considered as best, but her chance went glimmering on the first turn, where she suffered from interference and almost fell. The mishap benefited Furbelow, Which, in company witli Dancing Spray, forced or set a fast pace, but Iwin, a slow beginner, gradually overhauled the pair and beat Furbelow home in the final strides. . Dancing Spray tired from her exhaustive early effort and Klku headed her for third money. The three-quarters sprint brought to the post some fleet ones and fast time came with the race when High Cost covered the distance in 1:11. Marjorie Hynes was a slight favorite here, but tho best she could do was follow High Cost closely for" the entire race. Judge Budrow, an overwhelming favorite, was tliefirst choice to land a purse" in nearly two dnVs Hq proved much the best of the youngsters starting in the third race, but Kennedy had his victory in Jeopardy when he began easiug his mount up in the. last sixteenth, heedless of Red Legs close proximity to him and. but for Stack being forced to cease rising the colt hard when lie swerved, lie might have beaten Judge Budrow. Miss Fontaine was given the call in the second race, but J. B. Respess uncovered a good one in his Dimples, a first-time starter, which beat another first-timer, Cigale. Countess landed third after a stormy race. The first race found Gloria France the medium for confident support, but after running prominently for a half mile she gave way and Mabel G. took the purse from Claude Brown, witli Marvin May in third place. Jockey H. King was held to blame for the interference that came on the first turn of the fifth race and was suspended for five days by the stewards. Colonel Whitehead, in charge of the Remount Bureau in these parts, was a visitor at the track, in quest of suitable stallions for the government breeding depot. The Autumn Handicap and the Covington Handicap, each of ,000 added value, which will feature tomorrows card, are attracting much attention and indications are that a record attendance will again be on hand to view the sport. Manager "Winn is milking elaborate preparations for their comfort. Charles F. Grainger, resident manager of Churchill Downs, came over from Louisville this afternoon to confer witli Matt J. Winn and witness the racing for a few days. Mr. Grainger reports all in readiness at the Downs for the autumn racing and that stall applications are numerous. B. Frakes disused of Mazola on private terms this morning to, C. M. Hardy, who will race here until the close of the meeting and then ship to New Orleans. Representatives of the Business Mens Racing Association, controlling the Fair Grounds, New Orleans, are expected here shortly to unfold plans for their Intended winter meeting.
