lONLY CANTER FOR DR. CLARK Romps Home Easy Winner in Main Race at Laurel Rodriguez Rides Well. LAUREL, Md., October 4. The Palatine Handicap at a mile for three-year-olds, about which the Maryland State Fair Association built its program for this afternoon, proved only a canter for H. P. Whitneys Dr. Clark, which won by n length from Herrou, the Cuban Derby winner, flying the colors of E. Alvarez. J. It. Skinkers Cock o the Boost, the only other starter, was beaten off. Eddie Ambrose, who had the leg on Dr. Clark, rushed him into the" lead at the first turn, cutting across in front of the others from the outside position. He rated the Broomstick colt along under a stout pull all "the way in spite of the fact that Herrou forced a fast pace, although never seriously menacing the winner. Joe Rodriguez displayed good horsemanship iu winning the first two flat races on the card with Chevalier and Chasseur, an outsider and a favorite. Chevalier won brackets In competition with a large band of two-year-olds over the three-quarters of a mile course. Rodriguez took the Uncle Lottie Darr colt to the front and made him stick it out to win by a nose from J. E. Griffiths Pinilico, which closed with a rush. Sea Court was third. Chasseur won handily at a mile from a shif ty band asked to go a mile and a sixteenth. Rodriguez made all the pace witli the Light Brigade Pawnee colt and brought the M. J. Murphy colors home three lengths in front of Kubidium, which preceded Tantalus by two lengths. It was-the third straight win for Chasseur. Eugene Wayland graduted another maiden for W. J. Salmon in the fifth race, at a mile and seventy yards for three-year-olds and over. The pink silks were carried by Johnny Overton, a good-looking three-year-old black gelding, sou of Celt His Sister Anna, which was making the second start of his career. Well ridden by jockey E.
