FAVORITES PROVE FICKLE ; Unexpected Winners Crop Up in Jefferson Park Racing. Owner Kirby Wins Two Races and a Second Place Judge Price First at Long Odds. NEW ORLEANS, La., December 3. A. L. Kirbys colors were in the, limelight at Jefferson Iark this afternoon, were carried to victory on two occasions and barly missed making it a triple. His good fortune was inaugurated with Winchester in the second race and followed by the victory of Blue Jeans. His Jackstraw landed in second place in the following race. Winchester was an outsider in the betting but Blue Jeans and Jackstraw were favored and absorbed considerable betting attention. The trio were ridden by Burke. Close racing was the order despite the featureless card and ordinary starters. Backers of favorites experienced a rough time for most of the first eiolces were beaten in steady fashion. The overthrow- of choices began in the initial race "when Segurola was beaten easily by Celtic Lass. Charles A. Byrne was considered to have the second race at his mercy, particularly as Lyke had the mount on him, but Winchester never left the result in doubt, winning commandingly from the start, with Charles A. Byrne in second plnce. A pronounced upset came with the running of the sixth race,- for which H. C. Basch was. backed to the exclusion of all the others. The subsequent victory of Judge Price at fancy odds was a hard jolt for Jilnbackers. JuJgeErlce In- most -of his recent "races showed dismally and in view of his good race today it marked an outstanding form reversal. At that with a better rider H.. C. Basch. might have won. Another odds-on favorite to go down to defeat was Mnrphy. He showed the way until reaching the stretch where he was passed in turn by Bengali and Nprmandie, the former winning easily. Bine Jeans proved much the best of those- which met in the fourth race for she began poorly and had to come around all the others but won easily from Lovers Lane. Jockey Gregory was the first to come under the starters displeasure and was suspended for three days for disobedience at the post. Many additional arrivals got in this morning, the newcomers including G. R. Bryson, who brought his horses from Bowie. S. A. Clopton, acting for H. P. Whitney, sold Amuse to P. Lettelier at private terms. He also sold the chestnut yearling colt by Star Shcot Any Time to J. S. Randolph. Clopton has fifty horses here and he is making strong effort to dispose of most of them. i H. D.
