ANTILLES GOES TO POMERENE Carries Armonia Stables Colors to Victory in Havana Feature. Finish Close with Different Eyes Only Beaten by Nose Jockey Kennedy in Limelight. HAVANA, Cuba, Decerning 12. Pomerene, the four-year-old son of Jim Gaffney Serene, won the Antilles Stakes, the stake feature of an excellent Sunday program at Oriental Park. Pomerenes victory was only achieved after a stubbornly-contested race and a sensational finish, with only a nose separating the Armonia stables standard-bearer from J. D. Millins Different Eyes. The latter was gaining with every stride and just failed to get up. Osgood was third, closing fast in the last eighth after getting away slowly. Right Angle, which was coupled with the winner, showed the most speed to the stretch, then tired and dropped back. The races were run under bright skies before an immense throng, the crowd being a record for the present season. Society was out in force, every box adjacent to the promenade being occupied. Among those present were the Mexican and Roumanian ministers, many members of the Cuban senate and others high in official life. in Cuba. Jockey Bert Kennedy, who has already gained a large following here, rode two of the afternoons winners. He brought Guardsman home first in the inaugural dash, the five-year-old gelding leading .throughout by.a safe -margin.. Kennedys sccorirt "victory" came in the fourth race and it was his masterly ride on Natural that gave the Williams Bros, two-year-old a close decision over Gratian. The backers of Natural, and they were many, as he was a hot favorite, resigned themselves to the inevitable when the filly, was almost left and badly outrun in the early part of the race. Not so Kennedy. He never gave up, but took after the leaders, saved ground and, before the spectators were aware of it, was fighting it out . with the pacemaker, Gratian. The filly responded with rare gameness and in a terrific burst of speed got her head in front in the last few strides, turning certain defeat into a glorious victory. Great was the ovation accorded Kennedy after his brilliant display of . horsemanship. The second race, a dash of five and a half furlongs, resulted in a close finish, O. E. Van Winkles Pie beating Gus Scheer by a neck, the former tiring badly at the end after setting a fast pace throughout. The good marc Sister Susie was in excellent, form and ran accordingly to score an easy victory in the third race, in which she encountered no serious opposition. Pas de Chance and Miss Brush were equal favorites in the sixth race. The latter set the pace to the stretch, Avhere Pas de Chance passed her and drew clear. Miss Brush tired badly from her early efforts and Hunter Piatt outgamed her for second place in the last few strides. There will be no racing at Oriental Park Monday, that day having been designated by the management as a day of. rest. The sport will be resumed Tuesday with a good card of six races that filled better than any previous day of the season. According to agreement entered into between Ed Springer and Thomas Hodge, the former .turns over to the latter jockey Burley in exchange for jockey Bullman. Senor E. Alvarez leaves Wednesday for New Orleans. He proposes purchasing some "good racing material. The two-year-old Broomstick colt Two-pair, in the stable of S. A. Clopton, is one of the horses he will look over in view of becoming its owner. Senator C. J. Knight of Louisville was an arrival and will remain several weeks to enjoy the racing. J. O. Burttschell will in the future make riding engagements Qf both jockeys Bullman and Charlie Miller. . Frank Steinhnrt, president of the Havana Street Railway Company and a prominent member of the -Cuba-American Jockey Club, is able to etijoy racing again after a brief attack of illness. The Armonia stable lost Sister Susie, winner of the third race, when W. R. Padgett claimed the mare for ,100.
