HUNTING, FISHING AND SPORT. Two hundred thousand pounds of fish were taken in a few days from the waters of St, Andrews and Phillips Inlet on the west coast cf Florida. The California fish and game commission has imported eggs of the ayu, a trout-like fish of Japan. They are now being, hatched at the Mt. Shasta hatchery. At Stuart, Fla., the town that Grover Cleveland put on the map as a fishing resort, two fishermen recently landed a jewfish weighing 500 pounds, the record for the east coast. The ideal one-day deep-sea outing at West Palm Beach. Fhi., for land lubbers is a trip out to the Gulf Stream, only two miles off Palm Beach, where sailfish abound. These fish furnish very exciting sport. They weigh up to 150 pounds and at six to seven feet in length try the skill of the best anglers. They are beauties when mounted. A record cutthroat trout, measuring twenty-two inches in length and Aveighing four and one-half pounds, was taken out at the waters of Lake Sam-mamlsk. near Seattle, Wash., a few days ago by Harry ;Van. Tassel of that city. Lake Sammamisk .has. long been known to harbor some very large cutthroat, but these same fish are among .the: wiseet of their trible and have only occasionally been taken with hook and line, although the county game departments traps have registered several big fellows during the past. year. Clarence Thompson, a logger on Chicago Island, near Prince Rupert B. C, died recently from wounds inflicted by a large brown bear. Terribly, lacerated, Thompson was found by a searching party, to whom he gave a connected account of his experience before lie died.. Unexpectedly he came upon the bear .-while it was feeding on the carcass iof a deer. It rushed at him and he shot once before the huge paw landed with . smashing force on his face. The animal knocked and buf-leted him about, for a time and then walked away. When found Thompson had not a stitch of clothing on his body and he had suffered terribly from cold and loss of blood.
