FAVORED FAST SPRINTERS FOR SIRES Edward Hulton, a noted English turfman, was once asked what class of horses ho considered the best for stud duty as a sire. "The ideal test of merit is the fast mile." lie declared, "and the horse that can succeed at this distance among the best class and in the best time is the horse that is wanted to breed from. It will be found that the best stallions have proved their speed at about one mile. They may, of course, have subsequently shown that they could .stay longer distances as well. But no great sire lias lacked speed. It is the essential. Even long-distance racers, pure stayers I mean horses of one pace, but without speed have never been successful sires. My point is, it is not the pure stayer, with only one attribute, that makes the stallion."
