MACOMBER MAY RETAIN HIS MARES SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., December 17. A. K. Macomber may not sell forty-one mares he has at Elmwood Stock Farm after all. On a recent trip to his Paicines Rancho, San Benito County, Mr. Macomber stopped Off at his Mira Monte Slock Farm, Santa Clara County, to inspect eighteen coming two-year-olds and was so impressed by the looks, maniHTS and way pf going of the youngsters he was prompted to give reconsideration to the contemplated sale of the mares, among which are found most of the dams of the baby racers. The young horses have progressed fast under the care of Superintendent W. W. Mendenhall of Mira Monte, and when they are shipped to Fred Burlew at Belmont Park they will know a good deal about how to comport themselves on a race, track. Trials have demonstrated they can run, too. The youngsters are by Star Hawk, Dodge, Uncle, Trap Rock, Hesperus and other .well-bred stallions. Edward Heffner is here and will be joined in a few days by Andy Schuttinger. Mr. Heffner is well known in San Francisco, as he owned and trained some good ones at Emeryville. He was the guest for the end of the week of Major Sven Christenson on a motor trip to Pleasanton.
