For many years Carbine has been the standard, of comparison for great race horses in Australia. Now since Poitrels magnificent feat in winning the Melbourne Cup, last month, writers there are giving Carbines long held supremacy to the latter. Carbine carried 145 pounds and rah the two miles of the Melborune Cup in 3:28 in 1890. This year Poitrel carried 140 and won it in ,3:25. On this point a writer in the Sydney Referee says: "To argue on the relative merits of two horses, one of which raced thirty years before the other, can have no satisfactory conclusion. If the time test is taken as the basis for comparison, Poitrel is certainly faster than Carbine, .for the latter won his Cup in 3:28, while Poitrel occupied only 3:2r. This means that Carbine was about 44 yards from the winning post in 1800 when Poitrel was passing it in 1920 a difference of 15 lengths. On the time tost Poitrel is an easy first." The race itself was a tremendous affair and it was only in the last fifty yards that Poitrel go up in time to defeat the game three-year-old by a half length. Concerning its "final- drive and some aftermath, the widely known writer ".Pilot" said: "A furlong and a half from home Erasmus lertj and when Eurythmlc and Queen Comedy in tmn fell back beaten after a try To get on terms, his success was loudly proclaimed. Then Poitrel could be seen coming along on the outside, and He wins! He wins! could 1k heard on nil sides Erasmus rider saw the danger- but though he did his best to get a little more out of his mount, Poitrel, with one long sustained rush, gradually overhauled the three-year-old-and beat him a half length admist great excitement. It was a most popular victory and there was cheer after cheer as Bracken rode Poitrel up toward the judges box prior to returning to weigh fjjj r, , - THE GREATEST STAYER. I3SamongthxsawUo;-did notoelleve Poitrel "could win with 140 pounds, .holding that .it was almost impossible for any horse to succeed in a Melborune Cup nowadays with that weight. Now , I do not think there is any doubt as to Poitrel being the- greatest two-iniler Australia ever possessed. Erasmus ran excellently, and oven, allowing, for the bumping that took place, lils utter failure in the Derby is more than ever difficult to understand.. Eurythmic ran a good game race, but could not quite see the two miles out. At present a mile and a Jinlf may be his best distance. Kennaquhair did Well to finish fifth, and though not Poitrels equal he is also a high-class horse,. Although beaten into third place, Queen Comedy showed that her trainer was justified in having a good opinion of her as a stayer. Paratoo was sixth and was some distance in front of the last bunch, which comprised Ecarte, Red Cardinal, Tangalooma, Seabonnd and Aserlngton Salltros finished a long way back, and the last three were Strathdale, Drumore and Malurys. The time, though good, was considerably slower than last year.
