SOME UNEXPECTED RESULTS Several Jefferson Park Favorites Fail to Reward Their Backers. Angon Runs True to Form in Winning the Main Race Chief Brings a Surprise. HY J. L. DEMPSEY. NEW ORLEANS, La.. December 21. The three-quarters all ages handicap for a purse of ,000 fell to Lloyd Gentrys Angon. carrying 120 pounds, with Pickwick in second place and St. Quentin third, Flibbertygibbet, the only other starter, being far back all the way. The race was always held to be between Angon and Pickwick, with the former the heavily-backed choice at post time. Pickwick and St. Quentin dominated in the early running, but when straightened away in the stretch Angon passed into the lead with a rush and the finish found him easing up. Threatening weather was again the rule, but an absence of cold contributed toward the full strength of racing enthusiasts being on hand. The track was still heavy, but the racing was spirited and several of the finishes elicited keen enthusiasm. Some of the races were marked by form reversals, while bad riding was a contributing factor in the defeats of some of the presumed best starters. The most conspicuous form somersault was that of Chief, which in all but one of his preceding races here finished far back and at no stage was dangerous. But this afternoon he raced in something like j his best form and, though forced to race far back for a time as a result of a slow beginning, came I like a streak through the final quarter and overhauling the leaders won going way. He was in the mile and seventy yards dash in which Dancing Spray was the favored one, but she failed to get u portion of the purse. Another surprise came with the running of the third race, in which Hagazza was the winner. In a previous race Hagazza was beaten off. Her success today, however, was somewhat in the nature of a fluke, for Anticipate was probably best and with better luck should have won. Another unexpected victory during the afternoon was that of Silver Springs in the second race. Sea Court was best, but the inexperienced Hamilton was not equal to the emergency, resulting in Sea Courts narrow failure. The initial race produced a spirited finish, with Carline S. just managing to finish a nose before Hopover. Golden Dawn, favorite in the sixth race, had little difficulty about lauding the purse from Hallybell. The latter ran In much improved form, even if Aron, who rode him, does not rank with Robert. Snyder and Holmes secured Anticipate through the claiming process at a cost of ,S00. Tl.e entry of Opportunity will hereafter not be accepted at this track, on the report of Veternarian Hamlet Moore that he is unfit for racing. The Fair Grounds guiding spirits came to au understanding with the horsemens commission this morning and accepted the original proposition of the hoisenieii of ,000 purses and a ,500 handicap daily. This will eliminate the necessity of installing auditors to represent the horsemen, or bold 2." per cent of the purse money in escrow. The horsemens commission made it manifest tiiat in the event that business does not warrant ,000 P.nr.es the horsemen would meet the Fair Grounds management half way and a new purse adjustment be agreed upon. Secretary McLennan of the Fair Grounds is at present engaged in soliciting entries to the 5,000 New Years Handicap, to be run on the opening day. Golden Dawn was claimed for 00 by Mrs. G. H. Cochran out of the sixth race.
