I 1 CROMWELLS .SPLENDID RACE Consistent Old Campaigner Defeats Buford in Main Race at Havana. HAVANA. Cuba, December 21. The sturdy racer Cromwell scored his first victory of the present meeting when lie won the Holiday Handicap at Oriental lark this afternoon. The race was a dash of one mile and carried a purse of ,000. Cromwell shouldered the top weight of 124 pounds, made all the pace and, in a whirlwind finish, beat Huford by a nose. Hutwell rode Huford and resorted to every known artifice of his profession to get his mount in front, but to no avail. The horse responded with good courage at the top of the homestretch, but. after getting on equal terms with the leader, tired. There appears to be a hoodoo overhanging the Gohlblatt stable. The Cincinnati turfman sent several horses to the post which on paper looked like "good things," only to have them beaten out by a small margin. Discussion, an even-money favorite in the second race this afternoon, looked to be the best bet. Second was the best it could do. Assumption leading at the finish by a scant half length. Discussion had the outside position and was on the outside of the leaders all the way. but at the finish was going fast anil overtaking the winner at every stride. The stewaids approved the appointment of J. W. Ilunkett as trainer for II. E. and A. Davies horses. Their entries will now be accepted. H. Ieddie. the well-known racing man from Schenectady, X. Y.. accompanied by Stephen Quinn from the same place, were among the arrivals and are here as the guests of F. Frogan of Troy, X. Y.. who is spending the winter at Havana. P.ruen announced that there will be an extra day of racing next Monday, December 27, and thereafter there will be no racing on Monday until further notice. Mose Gohlblatt received a number of flattering offers from Cuban sportsmen to purchase the three-year-old Atta Hoy II. and the two-year-old Hilly Harton. The latter is regarded by Mr. Gohlblatt as a better horse than Damask, the winner of the Louisiana Derby at: New Orleans last spring. Billy Harton will be extensively engaged in next years stakes at the local track. The Cuban Derby Trial Handicap witli a purse of S!0O, for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs, is the outstanding feature of tomorrows piograni al Oriental Park and is in the nature of a preliminary to the Cuba Mile for Two-Year-Old Championship Stakes to be run next Sunday. Messrs. Stoneham and McGraw after a visit of two weeks to New York, where they went on business .connected with their baseball interests, returned to Havana Monday night, coming from Key West via seaplane. Hoth gentlemen were well pleased with the continued success of the racing at Oriental Park. They complimented general manager Frank J. ltruen for the manner in which lie has been conducting the same. After having enjoyed the races for over three weeks. Ha be Ituth leaves Monday morning for New York and Maine, where he expects to enjoy a sea-i son of shooting.
