CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF The popularity of Sweep as a sire is indicated by a full book for 1021. The estimable wife of AV. H. Tolmie. owner of the stable now racing at New Orleans, died at Saratoga last Friday. Edward Cebrian yearlings at Havana in charge of trainer John Lowe number seven, all but one of which are fillies. P. T. China has booked the mares Alburn and Iidy of the Barge to Fair Play and Seemly, Hosa-gine and Turban to Hourless. K. T. Wilson and his trainer T. J. Ilealey are at Kirklevington Farm in Kentucky inspecting the sires, mares and youngsters. The latter will finish out the Wilson stable of 1021 when selected. S. C. Ilildretb lias sold to C. M. Lawsou the yearling colt by Sweep Iridescence, by Peter Pan. for which he paid ,000 at last summers Saratoga sales. Trainer House now has the colt in his charge. Elias O. is the name of a yearling by Short Grass Mary PoWell that will carry E. D. Springers colors in the juvenile races at Oriental Park- after January 1. Brownell Combs has purchased in England the brood mare Shy Missie, the dam of Colonel Venule and she will be shipped to tiiis country after tins first of the year. During the past English flat racing season I-ord Derbys horses won thirty races and .4,070 and were beaten in twelve important races by mere heads. Hut for these "head" defeats the Derby stable would have doubled its seasons total. The Orby Mesange filly Head Note, for which Lord Wilton paid 0,000 as a yearling, was sold to .1. II. Pearl at the Newmarket Decemlwr sales for 2,.r00 for use as a brood mare. She was useless in racing. With the exception of Poitrel. everything thrown by Poinard has been a bay.
