HOT JEFFERSON FINISHES : r-r-! Many of the Races Decided by Heads or Noses. Veteran Hank ODay Wins at a Long Price Columbia Tenn Takes Another Purse. RY J. L, RF.MPSKY. NLW ORLKANS. La.. December 2L The most interesting racing of the present week developed this afternoon, in spite of the ordinary card which brought into action some of the most ordinary here. Surprises were also notctl. several of the winners being at extremely long prices and their showing this afternoon in striking contrast with several previous essays. Close finishes began with the opening race totla y. when Old McKciina, a receding favoVite. just managed to outstay the, poorly ridden Royden. Tin; latter was the btst horse, for in addition to suffering from bad tiding lie also was given a poor send-off. Plantoon, Louise Wynne and Mary Fonso came to the finish of the second race in such dost; alignment tiiat only the judges could determine the result and placed them in the above order. Approval, showing a sudden gain in form and under a capable ride. led for the entire way in the third race and just managed to outstay Rack Ray, with Ptillux pressing the pair closely. The consistent Columbia Tenn figured in another winning performance, when he led for the entire distance of the fifth nice and heat Ground-Swell and Sagamore home. Fine weather and an improving track were contributing causes to bringing to the course alKiut tin; best attendance that has been present on a day since -the opening. The betting was en a par witli the heaviest during the present meeting. The longest priced winner was Hank ODay. which got up in the final few strides to overhaul Harry Rttrgoyne. a well intended one, with Knos, another outsider, in third place. Mormon and Murphy were the favored ones in the race; but their chances went glimmering as a result of a poor start. After this race Murphy changed ownership, W. Look, the owner of Hank ODay, securing him at a cost of ,300. Alhena served as a medium for a mild betting coup in the sixth nice, which he won in easy style from I-oiena Moss, with Kingling II. in third place. The winner was much the best, for he-was far back for the first half mile and closed an immense gap in tile last quarter. Activity is the rule among owners at the Fair Grcunils and especial attention is being given to the big. band of two-year-olds stabled at the old track. There are several highly regarded ones. The C. W. Clark owned colt, brother to Jack Hare Jr.. is taking his work in impressive style and other owners are commenting favorably on his seeming promise. M. F. Hirsch acquired Sea Court on private terms this morning. O. Wendel claimed Malvolio for ,200 from the sixth race.
