DARING GERMAN BETTING PLEA A curious case, involving the legality of book-making, came up in the Rcrlin courts. A law passed last year makes it an iffense to earn a livelihood from gambling. The defendant, a lKok-inaker, with agents at numerous restaurants and cafes in Rcrlin. pleadetl that it was no offense to make a bock while the state encouraged gambling by lotteries and premium bonds and by keeping a share or the totalizator takings at races. His ccunsol aNo pointed out that legislation was about to be introduced for registering bookmakers. The bookmaker, however, admitted in cross-examination that he hail been posted for refusing to pay ,000 to a client who backed a 33 to I winner at Munich. He was fined 0. Liverpool Post.
