ROSS DERBY CANDIDATES Nominees from the Formidable Eastern Stable Calling for Consideration by Form Students BALTIMOKE Md March 19 There is much inferential strength in the Kentucky Derby hand of Commander J K L Koss of Montreal whose stable of thoroughbreds led American winners in 191S and 1919 and finished second last year witli over 210000 to its credit to Harry Payne Whit ¬ neys winning combination In Star Voter Cin ¬ cinnati Trophy winner of last year Oriole n youngster that furnished the contention in three or four of the Saratoga stake races for twoyear olds Sailing I a son of Trap Itock Peccadillo and an eastern winner Pampas an 11010 son of Short Grass Ellangownn and Baby Grand a fre ¬ quent winner in Canada last summer the Canadian horseman has nominated colts of demonstrated merit Probably Ajom an Knglish bred son of Aleppo Polly Hill II which also raced in Canada should be included in this category In Sun Turret a 25000 son of Snnstar Marian Hood Itegistrar a son of Friar Kock Star of Danube Itastile a son of Voter Oppression and Harmoniqne a son of Saidanapale Melody lie has named races highly bred and promising Any one of these colts may turn out as well as Kir Itarton winner of the Ken tucky Derby the Prenkness the Withers the Bel mont and Maryland Handicap of 1919 did When Sir Barton left Maryland for Kentucky in the first week of May 1919 to try his luck in the Derby he was a beaten maiden That the entry of Commander Koss is not to be idly counted out of Derby reckoning is obvious That the Canadian has a good sporting chance of taking down the winners end of the Churchill Downs prize of this coming May 7 is not to be disputed disputedThe The Ho horses of all ages will be ready for the earliest spring racing They have been gallop ¬ ing over the new mile course at Koss Farm in Howard County Maryland almost without inter ¬ ruption since1 Christmas Today Oriole Star Voter and Sailing It seem to be the most formidable of Commander Koss Derby colts Oriole a big brown of Homeric proportions is a son of Assagai and a i grandson of Spearmint he sire of i uiCjt Ui i ijr jr n aiidf fVi rtiMei lifsrfvVaPs Epsom terifr winner Ociole was bied by Walter Parnier in Tennessee bill he is of English blood He has a great turn of speed and last year he was all but unbeatable In muddy going Oriole is nearer racing than any of the other horses at the Koss training place He easily gallops away from the other threeyear olds oldsSTAR STAR VOTER UNLUCKY COLT COLTStar Star Voter is an Americanbred son of Ballot Starry Night a descendant in the female line of the celebrated Maggie 1 1J A compactly made chestnut of sturdy underpinning Star Voter reminds one of Sir Barton He was an unlucky colt last year A hurried preparation for early twoyear old racing in Maryland upset him and after his Cincinnati Trophy victory he was not of much ac ¬ count until autumn Indiferent racing luck brought about the defeat of Star Voter by Steplightly in the Futurity and by Believe Idle Hour in the Breeders Futurity at Lexington No threeyear old in Maryland has improved more in appearance than has Star Voter and no son or daughter of Ballot probably will race better tlian lie does this year whether he is lucky in the Derby or not Sailing B is a fast improving bay colt Com ¬ mander Koss took out of a selling race at Sara ¬ toga last August They think more of this colt at Boss farm than they do of any of the other three yearolds barring Oriole Sailing B however will have to improve a bit to develop Derby form Pampas is a halfbrother of Cock o the Walk and Arrah Go On He won at Iinilico last fall and appears to be a colt that will carry on He is a husky fallow fallowSun Sun Turret was the star yearling of the Saratoga sales of 1919 He is a Britisher through and thiough His sire Sunstnr is one of the most successful of Britisii stock horses His dam Marian Hood is of the family of the celebrated Quiver to which Sunbonnet Prince Pal Maid Marian Poly nielus Grafton and La Fleche belong Sun Turret was not hurried last year No effort was made to get him to the post until autumn But he showed fairly well at Pimlico in November Har ¬ moniqne is by Frances horse of the century dam a mare for which Commander Koss paid 30000 at the auction block Sardanapale was the French racing champion of 1914 Melody is a sister of the American Great Eastern Handicap and Stewards Cup winner Mediant Harmoniqne was bred in France as was also Bastile Har ¬ moniqne by Clarence II Mackay Bastille by John Sanford
