PIMLICOS GREAT SPRING MEETING NEARLY 200000 DISTRIBUTED IN STAKES AND PURSES PURSESDURING DURING TWELVE DAYS OF RACING RICH RICHPREAKNESS PREAKNESS STAKES THE BIG ATTRACTION The largest crowd ever gathered at Pimlico about 30000 witnessed the Preakness Stakes and the closing days racing of the Maryland Jockey Clubs spring meeting which began May 3 and ended May 1C There were twelve days of racing during which time eightyfour races were decided and the sub ¬ stantial sum of 199058 distributed among the successful horsemen The dally average distribution reached the high figure of 16638 While the opposition of the Jamaica meeting took away some of the star racers there remained plenty of horses of good quality to contest for the rich prizes offered As in former years steeplechasing was given a prominent place on the program and some great contests through the field were witnessed Of course the Preakness Stakes was the stellar feature of the meeting and while it did not attract the same amount pf attntion and intrest accorded the historic Kentucky Derby it surpassed that famous race in monetary returns to the winner Altogether the meeting was of the same high caliber that has characterized those held in previous years at Marylands oldest and most popular racing grounds By virtue of Broomspuns victory in the Preak ¬ ness H P Whitney heads the list of the money winning owners although it was the only race in which the famous Brookdale colors were carried at the meeting Aside from that race the money was fairly evenly divided the following being the larg ¬ est
