RACINGS DISAPPOINTMENTS Favorite Backers Pass a Disas ¬ trous Afternoon at Louisville Courtship Runs Away From Flags and Distinction Owner Whit ¬ ney Takes Two Races LOUISVILLE Ky Hay 17 Todays racing was prolific of upsets and form reversals with the winners coming from the most unexpected quar ¬ ters Incidentally it brought in its wake a con ¬ tinuous overthrow of favorites In this bad riding was a contributing factor The outstanding surprise came in the sixth race a threequarters 1500 handicap in which Courtship an absentee from racing since last year at Belmont Park spread eagled his opponents among whicji were included some of the best sprinters in these parts and won as his rider elected His success at that was lucky for Flags demonstrated his superiority and only his stubbornness at the post coupled with Hurrays lack of alertness at the start and during the running brought about his defeat He was forced back at the start to last place and when he was moving at express speed in a fair way to race into prominent contention Murray guided into a jam and had to take him back to last again He came around the others in the last half and picked his rivals up steadily but could not overhaul Courtship and Rangoon The latter under a running rido ran a fine race and finished gamely Several of the starters acted fractiously at the barrier and when the start came there was a jam Distinction being one of the sufferers and as a result she raced below expectations expectationsJockey Jockey J D Mooney figured extensively in the results of the afternoons racing and landed three of the winners He inaugurated his success with Clio Clio a first time starter which started form backers off badly when she beat Lady Madcap home by a narrow margin Lady Madcap should have been the victress and her defeat was due to J Howards overconfident riding in the early run ¬ ning when he allowed Clio Clio to steal away into a long lead and was unable to wear her down when he tried to do so soHe He Good in E R Bradleys silks was favored in the second race but she was beaten a nose in the last stride by Bonus which contributed the first part of a double for Harry Payne Whitney his Topmast accounting for the second twoyearold dash that was decided during the afternoon afternoonIn In the race won by Topmast Win Oldt was thn overwhelming choice but he tired fast after stren ¬ uous racing with Stamp for threeeighths Both Whitney oolts were ridden by D Connelly ConnellyMERCHANTS MERCHANTS DISAPPOINTING RACE RACEMerchant Merchant was held to ba best in the third race but he ran a poor race and was ridden hard in the stretch to land third place The purse here went to Tribune with Blarney Stone in second place placeParis Paris Maid held favoritism in the fourth race but did nothing to justify it and ran poorly poorlyMaster Master Bill was the winner here and his showing today was in sharp contrast to his previous per ¬ formances here Honolulu Boy and Simpleton also showed suddenly improved form and were prom ¬ inent contenders for the entire race raceThe The closing race found Mysterious Girl saving the form backers from total rout when she finished in front with Nelle Yorke landing in second place and The Virginian nosing out Grace for third phico phicoA A claim by K Pitt carded trainer of Simpleton for Alex Jr at a cost of 2500 was held in abey ¬ ance pending advices from Secretary Stall of the Kentucky Racing Commission if K Pitt is Un ¬ authorized agent for A W Jackson owner of Sim ¬ pleton pletonThe The riding of J D Mooney is coming in for con ¬ siderable attention He duplicated his triple vic ¬ tory scored one day last week by piloting Court ¬ ship Master Bill and Clio Cho to success successJames James Rowe returned tonight from Pimlico where he had gone to superintend the starting of Tryster and Broomspun in the Preakness Stakes The colts will reach here tomorrow It was only an eleventh hour decision that caused Broomspun to be sent for it was originally the intention of trainer Rowe to ship Tryster only to carry the Whitney silks This was made more positive when Penman was suspended for five days by the stewards for rough riding as it left Rowe without a rider for Broom spun The colts good condition however decided the matter in his favor and he accompanied Tryster TrysterLou Lou Calm became disgusted with the race run by Corilla yesterday and disposed of her privately to II Neusteter who will ship her with others to Canada shortly to campaign campaignPete Pete Coyne trainer for the George T Long stable is sufficiently recovered to direct the training of the horses He was at the track this afternoon afternoonThe The further entry of Sam McMeekin will not be accepted here according to a notice issued by th stewards this afternoon The action is the result of the horses incorrigibility at the post He has refused to join the others in going away from the barrier in his last two starts startsInspired Inspired by his Kentucky Derby success E R Bradley is mapping out pretentious plans for bis campaign of 19123 and it includes the invasion of England with some of his homebreds He will make four entries in the Epsom Derby Those to be named in it at present foals at Idle Hour Farm are the colts by North Star HI Miss Ringlets half brother to Behave Yourself this
