WINF1ELD TO SWEEPMENT Loft Jumper Scores Impressively Impressivelyin in Steeplechase Stake Sir Walter Handicap Easy for forCaptain Captain Alcock Valor ValorAgain Again Beaten NEW YORK N Y June 29 Sweepment made a now record for the Winfield Steeplechase Handicap Wednesdays Aqueduct crosscountry stake The gelding raced and jumped the about twomile grass course of the stake won its 3200 by a sturdy dis ¬ play of courage in the closing drive with Joyful The record for the race was The Brooks 408 in 1919 The Brook was a neat article an ong jumpers in those days So was Brooks which shared the track record with The Brook Sweepments time was 40X5 a cut of two seconds But it was the manner in which Sweepment won the Winfield that marked him as among the best of the younger crosscountry horses He is but five years old The game is for oldsters and Sweepment has his future before him Seventyfive yards from the finish Joyful had got to and beaten Sweepment Bill the long low gelding came again and by sheer courage got up to beat the smart nare by the length of his neck neckSweepment Sweepment is a New York favorite He was staunchly supported So were the J E Widener pair Joyful and Frank B The race was run as though there had been an agreement to heat Mrs JxVfts son of Sweep The generous running but unfinished fencer Frank B went out as a fast pace ¬ maker and he led the others a merry pace for moie than a mile and a half Then Mcrgler sent Sweep ¬ ment to the front and Joyfuls turn to catch and l eat Sweepment had arrived arrivedShe She closed fast and the pair fought it out tooth and nnil to the end Once in the flat home she got to and hended Sweepment and both were driven home to the limit of thoir endurance Sweepment would not be beaten however and gradually got to and Leaded Joyful to win almost on the win ¬ ning post by a neck Syrdarya coining fast and jumping well ran a fine race and was third three lengths away Frank B tired from his early pace and was a matter of eighteen lengths away Set Wold and Bush severed connections late in the fray She was jumped on before the separation separationMAX MAX HIRSCH PROUD OF SWEEPMENT lie educated him as race horses are educated on u rope circuit over low obstacles Last season Hweepment was erratic in jumping taking his fences how and where his sweet fancy listed some ¬ times at their wings and always in jumpasjump ran fashion He was always roped Age and ex ¬ perience have brought working thought and sobriety to the Swe p gelding and he is now a clean bold and brilliant fencer gaining as he jumps Then too Sweepment is a fast horse on the flat and is pinic as he showed in the Winfield finish and has size scope and substance Sweeimicnt should im ¬ prove and be among the best crosscountry horses in the land though not yet a Can Can a Good and Plenty or a Weldship WeldshipThe The Winfield ccurse was mellow The rain had softened its turf and left it ideal for the race flic rain had softened the main course All the afternoon it was soft the rails and the early going was a trifle nippy But after the third race the going was fas The air was hot and hazy and provocative of speed After tJirce oclock a grate ¬ ful breeze came in from the sea Ten thousand people were at Aqueduct to we the sport which was not of as much class as of interest interestThe The Uancocas folks has sere and yellow episodes nowadays One of them turned up in the opening race a seller at six and a half furlongs for fair kind of cattle It had thirty original candidates Twentyone were retired by mercifiif pencils Valor uf much recent Uancocas action and disaster was the favorite and supported as if a certainty He failed as he failed with Ralco last Monday The XalapaLexiugtonSimmsMcClelland erratic MeGee colt Despair was Valors conqueror Despair wasnt without backing and away moderately well waited behind Star Court and Valor to the turn There he closed and Star Court having retired lie and Valor had it out to the eighth post where Kandes whip signaled defeat Valor answered courageously enough but Despair was his master and won both out to the last on net by a half length Agile and aged Jock Scot was third a rotiplc of lengths away Sam Louis sought Despair unil it cost the Kentuckians 1800 to hold him to their colors colorsOVERDUE OVERDUE STOCK PIN A WINNER WINNERAfter After Sweepmenls nice jumping display came a twoyearoli chute melee of fiveeighths of a mile It was for nonwinneis of the meeting Half a dozen owners thought they could win The Despair folks risked part of their spoils on Sweep a nice wellbalanced bay colt by Sweep Enamelin which lias been mildly raced for measuring purposes since lie came from Kentucky The overdue Stock Pin which has been out lucked and outrun in a lot of local races was also fancied by his ioniicetions Ko was J U Wideuer8 Whirligig and the over ¬ due Run cocas colt San Stefano Stock Pin won all the way He was off fourth and at once rushed to the front by Weiner who likes to ride there Stock Pin was never approached though he was rid rcn out to win by two lensths from S weepy which ould never get up though off well The fast Mad Nell was aagin unlucky She and Whirligig which was much roughed in the race were away in the rear Both wove their way through horses and landed third and fourth The Cosden colt Rest ¬ less ran a good race The last ten of the eighteen Barters never had a chance and never seemed to seek on onThe The class of flat racing was gathered in the Sir Walter Handicap of a mile Recent selling race sports had made the Sir Walter of minor stake value more than 2100 for the winner The Qnincy Htiible colt Captain Alcock which is a shifty handi capper nowadays won He was the favorite at too long a figure He had trouble in the race is the sort among such horses to overcome troubles and win The trouble of other horses and riders aided him Away slowly the Captain gained on the sharp pacing Fair Gain and Hobey Baker as the field raced around the double turn Coming into the straight next the rails the pair iu front chose to go there too the track was drying out inside and Captain Alcock was shut off Mooney took Captain Alcock back and to the center of the track and there ran past the leaders and won at his case He was well aided near the end by a pe ¬ culiar bit of riding contention Whie racing for position at the turn the bad tempered Fair Gain and Turner offended master Ridennuv on Hobey Baker Ridenour resented this and devoted the balance of his action in the race to roughing Fair Gain and his rider For his headiness Ridenour will not ride any more horses at the meeting meetingA A poor lot raced for 1800 or so in the fifth event a claimer at a mile for sad performers The overdue Uep well backed got off flying under Turner did not stop as has been his habit and beat Gipsy Lad in a hard drive Gjpsy Lad prob ¬ ably best was slow to get going ap4 closed fast Frank Fogarty was third and then ctjme Sister Flo which with Frank Fogarty as the Quincy Stable entry was the favorite The fjejd was hardly worth the amount of the prize prizeAfter After winning five consecutive races in three spheres of action K J Murphys Misdeal met her match in a fiveeighths allowance dash for two yearolds which brought the days racjng to a close The English daughter of Sir Wjjfrod Colorvieto finished third two lengths unQ a neck behind Little Chief and Modo The Uancocas cojt Little Chief under Sande took the track at once and stood a long hard drive gamely by two lengths Modo was only a neck before Misdeal The trio had the race between them Modo only caught Misdeal near the finish Eugene Wayland will ship the horses he is train ¬ ing for W J Salmon to Saratoga on Friday FridayPat Pat Dunne is an arrival from Kentucky At present his thoroughbred stock is limited to the stallion Under Fire which is standing on W C Goodloes farm in the Blue Grass State StateIn In the process of distributing the large amount
