; THEYRE OFF AT FORT ERIE I Second Thoughts Accounts for Niagara Stakes I Eddie Rickenbacher Meats Defeat. FORT ERIE, Out., July 2. Edward F. Whitneys consistent daughter of Ultimas Lydia II., Second 1 Thoughts, accounted for the annual renewal of the Niagara Stakes at Fort Erie this afternoon. Oga- 1 rite was the one to run second, while the Canadian- bred Corenzio was third. Tiie race was a dash i of five-eighths, to which ,500 had been added. ! Of the original overnight entry list but six con- tested the issue, with Second Thoughts an over- . whelming favorite. There was a slight delay at the post, but the start was a good one. The win- i hit and Captain Scott were the first two to show in front, with Corenzio in close pursuit. They raced this way for the first three-eights and Captain Scott, was through. Ogarite in the meantime was i hemmed in next to the inside rail and Walls was forced to take the outside. Second Thoughts ! swerved badly under the weight through the final sixteenth of a mile, but was clear and did not interfere with any starter. Ogarite closed fast i and wore down Corenzio in the final strides to take the place by a short margin. The opening dash of the summer meeting of the Niagara Kacing Association was ushered in this afternoon under conditions that could hardly be improved upon. Well balanced fields paraded for i each of the different races and spirited racing re- i suited. Apart from the running of the feature race the Lafayette Hotel Handicap was offered as a secondary feature. This race, which was a three- i quarters, brought together some of the fastest sprinters on the circuit. This even itsulted in a I surprise for the talent when Mock Orange came along to win over Eiddie Riekenbachar, with Day-due third. The winner was ridden by C. Lang and negotiated the distance in 1:13. The early pace was set by Carmandale and Hidden Jewel and both quit. John Hachmeister, one of the stewards at the Cuban meeting, arrived from Latonia this morning and viewed the races from the judges stand. Mr. Hachmeister, returns to Kentucky tomorrow. The Florisunt Stables Our Birthday, which was shipped here from Kentucky in the Brockmiller nr. was returned to Windsor yesterday by Jack OBrien. The plater will be rested up and turned ov- r to L J. Salt. At tin recent meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations held at Hamilton it was left optional what different clubs to draw for post position on the day of the races or the day previous. In the latter case the post position will be in program order and this will be followed out at Fort Erie. . Jockey J. Gruber will in future do the riding for the stable of A. L. Kirby. Numerous scratches were necessitated today, due to the late arrival of the special horse train from Hamilton. The horses were late In loading at Hamilton. Henry McDaniel, principal trainer for the J. K. L. Boss stable, will decide at this meeting which of the juveniles, in addition to some of the older horses, that will carry the Canadian sportsmans colors at Saratoga.
