QUEER ITALIAN BETTING M0N0PLY The first French bookmaker who started operating on the Italian turf had to share his profits with the race societies. The first -10.000 lire about .200 made went to them; he took tile next 40,000 lire, and anything beyond was equally shared. Hooks were kept in duplicate, and were open to inspection by the officials. The first year the profits were 1,230, and in 1000 he took over the local pari-mutuels as well, and obtained a monopoly of the betting.
