CONTINUES WINNING WAY , F Yellow Hand Runs Sparkling Race to Take Morrisiana Handicap, i ? for 0, ii in Rose Brigade and Sweepy Account J t for the Juvenile Races n fi Pickwick Again Beaten. L f o of 1 XKW YOFK. X. Y., July IS. Yellow Hand is a good race horse just now. In the past the Knsscudalc gelding has been washy and unable to hold his best form long. Kut Mr. Ooldsborough v has evidently sot his nieasure. for Yellow Hand " ran his sixtli successive fine race tUis year to win the Morrisania Handicap, at a mile wild a sixteenth, perhaps his favorite route, at Empire City this afternoon. It was a good, fast race. too. with a 11 first quarter in J4. the half in 48. mile in 1:30 Vi " and the distance in 1:43, only four-fifths of a v second off the joint Empire City record of 1:44, held by Borrow in lil." and Spur in 1917. l Borrow and Spur were smashers in their time and : place. Yellow Hand won decisively, as he should have won. nor was In? a short price, as he should have t boon considering the track too hard for Royee j Eoola best effort. Yellow Hand had plenty of weigut up, 122 pounds. Koyce Kools was in light, j with 109 pounds. Then there was modest Dr. Joe, vltJi 97 pounds, and flashy Diminesdale, with 10. pounds. Keeount, Sedgefield, Dry Moon and Ed- wimi stayed at home. Miller sets along well "t with Yellow Hand and rides him perfectly. s Tlie English gelding always dominated the race. t Ir "was Olt 111 Irbnt. used liis great speed for three- r eighths ill front, was steadied on the turn, went to the front In the stretch and won in a leisurely sort . of way. Koyce Kools. on the outside all the way. Van uwny from the others in the straight, but could not get near the leader. He was five lengths behind Yellow Hand at the winning post and two in front of Dr. Joe. During Yellow Hands steady- . ing spell Sillier took .him off the pace Dinmies- ,. dale made a flashy rush to the front. It was a mere bluff and lie came home last, worn down in . the closing strides by Dr. Joe. a HOSE BRIGADE LEADS ALL THE WAY. - Eight of the dozen two-year-old fillies in the t five and a half furlong Sylvan Iurse raced for it. The Kancocas Kose Brigade, a fast, generous i youngster, with Fa tor on her back, got away well, j took the lead at once and was never caught. "Witchwork followed Kose P.rigade and was slightly . impeded by her there was no foul a furlong I out. Witchwork didnt stay, even under the whip, and the Whitney filly Carniencitn. forced Into wide restraint, closed fast under punishment, beat Witchwork home and ran its good a race as the ; winner. Tulwar had no luck. Matches Mary had a clear path always. Little Mother took the long, wide way home. Only the first two were in the market. The Loiiis-IIildreth difference over selling prices and weights continued, and it cost Kancocas ,r, to keep Kose Krigade within its fold. Wherever and whenever conditions are limber enough to open the racing gates for them the claiming plebeians enter. There were seventeen of tliem in the Palisades Iurse. for a duel at i mile and a sixteenth. Thirteen of them stayed for the fray, witli old Iickwick ruling a pronounced market far too pronounced for such as he. He was backed as a surety and failed again. Tufter was well ic-garded by his patient party he has been ready for business for some days. The others were only nibbled at. Kice is handy with money rides in the summer days, and contributed to Pickwicks favoritism. Tufter had Campbell up nu.l was wpII served, off fast and rated in front. Kice followed similar tactics with Iickwick and mme.l up for business on the stretch turn. The pair had a hard ami intense drive all down the. stragnt, but Pickwick defaulted again, for, under a hai-il l-and ride, Tufter came home resolutely and finished first witli Pickwick at his side, a good half :i length to the bad. Scotch Verdict, always within striking distance, hadnt the speed to do better than be third, only an open length away. However, Scotch Verdict is ready in his own group, .io is Padua, . which wasnt well ridden. ARROW OF GOLD BEST OF PLATERS. Fourteen most mediocre three-year-olds of the selling plate division contested the Edgecliffe at five and a half furlongs. Arrow of Gold was made favorite, as she should have been on recent racing form. The Whitney stable colors seldom appear in selling races. They did here, as Princess Pandora bore the respected blue and brown. She had Coltiletti up and was second choice. Actress got sharp support. So did several others. All were false goods, but Arrow of Cold. Keogh up, was off in Tront with the Celt filly and hand rode her vigorously all the way and powerfully in the" last sixteenth to win by a length from the rank outsider, Klue Kelle, which closed stoutly under sharp punishment. "With better luck on the turn Klue Kelle might have won. Mr. liutlers Khinestone, also an outsider, ran as well as either of the leaders. She was off in a tangle, made up ground entire race and closed fast at the finish to nip Xohant right at the winning post. Xohant had come from nowhere in the stretch. Actress and P. T. Kurmiin quit. Turnabout had no chance from the start and Celtic Lass was always on the rocks of impediment. Princess Pandora had no luck, but was evidently where she belongs. The Xalapa Stable, of Klue Crass land and leanings, tried Fa tor on Sweep because Cliff Robinson, its regular money rider, is off on his wedding tour. Sweepy was a maiden. He had been tried a half dozen times and found wanting. Once or twice he cost hia folks. They got back their own in the race i for the Mapleton Purse for two-year-old sellers I noii-winuers of three races at five furlongs and a , half. Only nine of the seventeen entered went to the barrier. They were pure selling platers of the present and future. From I In- way the two-year i.hl-t about liciv arc miming I here is a world of selling race material of the future being piled up. If prices fall a dozen could be bought for the amount of a metropolitan purse, Fator and Sweepy ; . i I , got along well together after the sou of Sweep had I been pressed into favoritism. Zenuotta and Dan got some support and Kcparation was considered I as a "good thing" by a wise few. Reparation, with Kelsay on his back, was away with a whirl and j ran the first two quarters in 233 and 24 seconds . fine speed for Yonkers. Zennotta was at him all I the way. Fator showed riding wisdom. lie kept I close, but out of the lickety splitism in front and I closing on. the racing leaders at the rails on the . last furlong Sweepy wore both down and won, ridden out to the limit, by a length. Reparation had more stamina than Zennotta and was j second. It was a well-spent trio that came back ; to the scales. Only Domingo was absent from the field for the Seymour, at a mile and a sixteenth. The race was j for maidens. The ten contestants were a drab , lot. One wishes without hope that the tribe . would decrease by a faster method than winning r elimination. But they were there and had to j race and for ,:i00. too. There was another r failure among ten. It was Smarty, which came from Maryland witli a reputation he had mislaid 1 after his entrance to a big city. Tom Welch , picked him up cheap and heartened him. Lucky ,. Find was made favorite. He is misnamed. Lucky r Find was his monikers reverse. Five of the ten were backed, Smarty among them. Tom Welchs s rider. Turner, was up and got the Theo. Cook j colt off in front with elasticity and on his foremost I foot. Smarty didnt enjoy his trip much. Gem and Fringe were at him constantly, and he was a busy young horse all the way. He drew clear r In the stretch and Tinner kept him going to the u end to win by a length from Gem, she as far before Lucky Find, which was always a bit too slow to get to the front, thohgh he aided in the business of the leaders. Smarty, though, ran a smart sort of a race. Its first two quarters were in 23 Ii and 24 good speed for this sort. Out-side Yellow1 Hands sterling per.forniande, todays racing at Yonkers was only passable. The going was fast it will get faster and the air ideal, with a nice breeze blowing down the stretch. Breezes are scarce and welcome nowadays more welcome than bad horses. A crowd of seme 0.000 was at the course. Four favorites behaved themselves, and Fator rode two of them. Kenny Leonard, the lightweight pugilistic champion, made his entrance into the ranks of thoroughbred horse owners through the purchase from the Bedstone Stable of Xeddam. W. Travers, who trains Koyce Kools for an interest allied with Leonard, "will condition the horses of the lightweight king. Morvich. the two-year-old son of Kimnyniede Hymir. again startled work watchers at Empire Cily this morning and turned in the fastest move ever recorded by local tracks within the observation of the present crop of second splitters. Morvich. with Coltiletti astride, broke at the three-quarter start, went an eighth in 10. a quarter in 21 and easily rounded out Hie three furlongs in 31. running the quarter in 21. Morvich up-preached the American record for the distance made in 1890 at Butte, Mont., by Bob Wade, a four-year-old.
