SARATOGAS SATURDAY PROGRAM SARATOGA SPECIAL, CHAMPLAIN HANDICAP AND NORTH AMERICAN STEEPLECHASE STELLAR ATTRACTIONS --BEST RACERS OF RESPECTIVE DIVISIONS AMONG THE ENTRIES AVIiile the much-discussed and eagerly hoped-for meeting of Morvicli and Miss Joy will not take place at Saratoga today, the general excellence of the half-holiday program provided by the Saratoga Racing Association leaves nothing undesired for an afternoon of racing of the highest juality. In addition to the Saratoga Special, the Champlain Handicap and North American Steeplechase will divide interest witli the great two-year-old attraction. For the Saratoga Special seven of the best juveniles of the year arc named to clash in this, the most sportsmanlike race in this country. Morvicli, Kai-Sang, AVilliam A., Sir Hugh, AVhiskaway, Lord Haiti-more and Bet Mosie make up a field promising as fine a contest as was ever run for this coveted race. The Saratoga Special came into being at a time when racing was most prosperous and the spirit of rivalry was highest. Its conditions appealed to those who had been prominent in the rennaissance of the turf. That it has been carried in the program of the Saratoga Association is a good thing for the sport, as it has a sportsmanlike tradition that excites a healthy influence. From its first running in 1901, when it was won by Goldsmith, a stout little son of Meddler owned by AV. C. AVhitney, down to the present day, it has brought out the best youngsters of the year and resulted in spirited contests. Tryster captured it In 1920, and glancing back over the list of good horses enrolled as winners the names of Irish Lad, Sysonby, Mohawk II., Sulvidere, Sir Martin, Colin, Novelty, Roamer, Regret, Campfire and Sunbriar are prominent. No racing in 1911 and 1912. The Champlain Handicap also sparkles with the quality of its probable starters, the overnight acceptances including the cream of the older division of handicap horses. This race is virtually a sequel to the Saratoga Handicap, which produced such a superb race between Mad Hatter and Yellow Hand. This pair may bo regarded as certain starters. The same race will give easterners a glimpse of Best Pal, the best horse in the AVest in the handicap division. Idle Dell, with two recent impressive victories to her credit, is also among the entries and will not lack admirers if she answers the bugle call. Royce Rools, Senuings "Park and Paul Jones make up the remainder of the field. Like the Saratoga Special, the Champlain Handicap was established in 1901 and during its eventful history many noted horses have won it, as the following tabulation discloses: iear. First. Age. In keeping with the high caliber of the races on the flat, the North American Steeplechase promises to be one of the greatest contests decided through the field this year. The champion jumper of 1921, Sweepment, is a sure starter and will find sturdy opposition from such as Ticket, Minata, Joyful, Royal Arch, Peccant and others. The winner will certainly be entitled to take a prominent place on the list of the crack jumpers that have made the North American popular in past years, the following tabulation giving details of its history since its establishment in 1904: 1enr.
