RESTRICTING USE OF THE WHIP In New Zealand it is proiRsed to amend the rules of racing so that an apprentice, who has not ridden twenty winners, will not be permitted to carry a whip. There are also riders, long past the apprentice stage, who should be similarly treated. In fumbling for the whip placed by many between the thigh and the saddle it is not unusual to see ft rider let go a horses head, and Iheieby lose enough ground to make ihe difference between losing aud wiuuiug.
