DORYALS LARGEST CROWD Sees Lucky B. Victor in Main Race After Spirited Finish. Star Realm Wins and Establishes New Track Record Witch Flower at Short Odds. MONTKEAL. tine... August 27. The La Salle Handicap, the principal attraction of this afternoons card was carried off by G. Mucfnrhincu Lucky K., which was returned winner in a spirited and closely contested finish witli My Mazie, tile odds-ou favorite Hildur finishing third. The start was a good one and My Mazie rushed away in the lead and set the early pace, which was fast for the track. Hildur followed her, but was unable to keep up. When rounding the turn into the homestretch Lucky K. came up on the outside and Lady Meave attempted to go through on the inside. Lucky K. gained fast and soon drew abreast witli My Mazie. Not until in the last few strides, however, was the sou of Jim Gaffney able to secure a slight advantage, and only after a terrific drive was he given the decision over the game filly. When well past the sixtenth post Hildur became groggy from the dizzy pace, and, tiring badly, sweived to the inside fence and forced Lady Meave to her knees. J Rowan, who was astride the Seagram filly, unloosened his foot from the stirrup iron and dismounted Witli a limp. biit on closer examination in tbe jockeys rcom there was found to be no injury beyond a slight swelling! The-Saturday afternoon card was a well balanced one and productive of spirited and thrilling racing. The crowd, which was one of the largest in the history of the course, packed every available inch of space. Speculation was brisk nnd the majority of the winners were accorded a full measure of support. In the running of the Montreal Purse, which was fashioned for Canadian-breds at one mile, the shortest paid winner of the meeting was returned when Witch Flower, from the Thorncliffe Stable, defeated Reconnaissance after a hard drive. The winner assumed an easy lead rounding the far turn, but was driven out -at the end to save her fast dwindling advantage. W. Walkers Star Realm was returned the winner of the fifth race, a dash of a mile and seventy yards, in an easy manner over Gath and Darnley. The winner assumed the lead when loundiiig the far turn and won out in a decisive manner. In so doing he established a new track record, which clipped four-fifths of a second off the previous mark, which was 1:43 J. BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR BLUE BONNETS. Ijouis Angevine. the secretary of the Montreal Jockey Club, was an arrival this afternoon. Mr. Angevine is enthusiastic over the coming meeting, which opens one week from today. Clarence Buxton sent word today that he would ship-his extensive stable from Devonshire to Blue Bonnets. Jockeys M. Buxton and the apprentice Gantner will accompany the stable. The stable of G. M. Hendrie came here from Windsor and is now quartered at Blue Bonnet. The horses are in charge of trainer John Walters. The entire division was shipped here to remain fo-the remainder of the Montreal racing season. M. Brenners Chief Sponsor was excused from starting in the third race today by the steward. The horse struck himself this morning while galloping at Blue Bonnets. Schooling hours have been appointed for both Blue Bonnets and Dorval between the hours of ! and 10 a. in. each morning. "Red" Gilmour is at the former place and Eddie Thomas "at the latter place. Three large express ears have been pressed into use to transport the horses stabled at Mount Royal and Klue Bonnets to Dorval each day. Thomas Gorman, secretary of the. Coniiaught Park Jockey Club at Ottawa, arrived this morning. Mr. Gorman reports that among the new improvements at Coniiaught Park are a new entrance and an added number of sleeping quarters at the stables. Mr. Gorman announced that Lord Byng, the new governor-general of Canada, would make his first public appearance in Canada during the fall meeting and drive to the course in state. Arrangements have been co-operated witli the exhibition company whereby there will be a rooming list over 1,000 rooms. Sidney Bender is expected here during the next few days to line up horsemen intending to ship to Oriental Iark, Havana, Cuba, for next winters meeting. Charles Campeaii received a letter from II. D. Brown this morning in which he stated that he had completed the construction of a shooting lodge at Cisson, Cal., at the foot of Mt. Shasta. Mr. Browns town house at Los Angeles is also Hearing completion. Mr. Brown is expected in the East during the month of October.
