COPPER DEMON BY INCHES i Carries Quincy Stable Colors to Victory in Maryland Handicap. Careful Runs Smashing Race Under Big Weight Popular Billy Kelly Meets Mishap. IiAUREL, Md., October 15. Tiic Maryland Handicap, the1 outstanding feature of todays card at Laurel, resulted in a splendid victory for the iuincy Stables Copper Demon, the three-year-old sia of Ormojidale Ijady Bedford, in a spectacular finish wijh J. Stanfords Chateau Thierry. Polly Ann- was third. Tlie winners share of the stakes amounted to 8,250. The start was delayed several minutes by the fractious behavior of Dark Horse and Polly Ann, the first mentioned being an added starter. The field finally got away to a good start and Polly Ann was the one to bo sent to the front, while the remainder of the field was in compact formation. The early pace was fast and the early order was maintained for the greater part of the distance. Iliee, on Copper Demon, tried to go through on the inside when well straightened out on the. back-stretch, but Dark Horse blocked him and Copper Demon was knocked back. Undismayed, Rice went to the whip and, rounding the turn for home, came to the outside of; the leaders. The Quincy Stable starter responded in a courageous manner and closed resolutely. Chateau Thierry, which secured clear paBsagcTduhdihg the far turn, had passed Polly Ann-rand- looked all over it winner, at the sixteenth poet, However, Copper Demon .was not to be denied "and, closing with great speed, got up in the closing strides to win the verdict by the shortest of in;orgins; Jolly Ann was a tiring third, but had a safe margin over Jeg at the finish. The winner was supported with rare confidence by the public and his- victory was a popular one. Saturday afternoon brought out a crowd of record-breaking proportions to laurel Park and the card offered was an exceptionally good one. Apart from the feature attraction several handicaps, in which good fields were carded, resulted in stirring racing. The track was fast and good time was recorded in most of the races. The supplementary feature of the day was the Arundel Highwcight Handicap, at three-quarters of a mile, in which W. J. Salmons beautiful filly Careful ran a smashing race under heaty weight and won under a hard drive. Careful was conceding much weight to all her opponents, but she had the most speed and led all the way. First she raced Messlnes into defeat, then withstood a threa toning challenge from Ararat and finally outlasted Caligula, although bard pressed at the end. STEEPLECHASE TO MINATA. Mrs. F. A. Clarks colors were carried in front in the race through the field, her English bred jumper, Minata, defeating Frank 15. and Peccant, two good steeplechasers which performed creditably Today, but were forced to surrender to the winner. ThV mile race, run as the third, removed the ever popular Billy Kelly from the scene for some time. The crack racer bled and was pulled up after he had set a fast pace for a half mile. The winner turned up in Knot, which beat another iwpular racer in Tippity Witchet. The latter ran his usual consistent race, but the Jack Atkiu mare proved too speedy for the game little gelding. .!. W. Formans recent acquisition, Elemental, made good in a flattering manner in the opening dash. ne raced forwardly the entire way and after racing Yankee Star into defeat held Opperman safe at the cud. The race was robbed of much interest, due to unnecessary crowding, in which Sedge -was the chief victim, although Caretaker failed to escape scot-free. II. B. Campbell was today distributing stable application blanks for the coming meeting at Jefferson Park. 0. E. Pons shipped to Empire City this morning and Frank Farrar sent along four in the same car, named-, Hendrie, Solid Bock, Enerinitc and Morning Face. Jockey T. Brooke accompanied the shipment. 7. G.
